Ever wonder what jelly beans are made out of?

Jelly bean have shellac on them coating of them to make it shine and give it color. Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes and dissolved in ethanol to make liquid shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish.This is pretty gross why couldn't they come up with somthing else to put on the coating. Why bugs I really don't get it at all. really gross. do the food industry care what we consume?

@tuckersheri I will eat my jellybeans and I won't look it up because I might get grossed out and won't eat them.:)

@tuckersheri it's just from a bug? some countries even eat fried grasshoppers, so it is just a matter of how strong your stomach is
