My paintings waiting for my attention

Gurgaon, India
May 17, 2017 10:31pm CST
I am an artist and I make oil paintings. We need to use varnish spray on the paintings after it is completely dry, to keep it safe and shiny. I usually do thick coating of colours so I wait for six months to a year to let them dry completely. There are many paintings waiting for me to spray on them the varnish coat and I have been postponing it for months but enough is enough, I have decided to do it today. Finally I am going to get it done today.

Thanks, this painting is made in an ancient Indian art form which is called Madhubani. Yes oil paints take months to get dry completely from inside, it can depend on the layers of colours and thickness of the it, the use of oil or turpentine.

I use to paint before but I do not apply fixative to my oil paintings and dont apply thick paint, thin coats one on top of the other, I however apply fixative on pastel works, anyway I guess we all have different styles. Wow that is a long time to dry and good that you finally decided to work on it

Yes everyone follow different styles to paint and keep it attractive and safe. I want to get as perfect look as possible so I apply at least two coats of colours so it becomes thick and need more time to dry. I will surely do it today.

The picture of painting tells that it is an awesome painting. However, I could not understand what for a varnish coat is required on the painting? Are there no other option to preserve the colors of painting?

@Bodyandbrain - Thanks for explaining. I did not have any idea about varnish. Although one of my Uncles (Chacha) is an artist and he used to do oil painting on a piece of glass. At that time we used to live together in a joint family and we used to watch him painting. I cannot recall if he used to use varnish to preserve his paintings.

@dpk262006 there is a difference between glass painting and canvas painting.

It is oil painting and oil painting are not framed but to keep the colour safe and give it some more shine we need to spray on it. The thin layer of varnish will cover the painting and will lost for decades, once we find that the layer is looking yellowish we can remove that and spray again.

Thanks for your appreciation, this painting is made by me. Oil paints really take time to dry up, they get touch dry in few days but to dry completely from inside it takes months.

Waiting so long for them to dry , needs a lot of patience, which you obviously have.

@Bodyandbrain That would be sad, after all your painstaking work.

@dianadee yes that is why having patience is better. Although there are sprays available which can be spread after few weeks of completing the painting if we have to deliver it, I go for the other option.

Yes I need to have patience because if I will not wait and spray without the colours dried completely, the paintings will not lost long.

@Bodyandbrain I wondered if that might be the case. I always put off doing tricky like this too but eventually you just have to do it.

Yes we need to have some precautions while using the spray, it is highly toxic and inflammatory. Applying a proper coat equally to the whole canvas is also I find difficult.

@JudyEv it is an important process to keep the paintings safe and make them more attractive so I had to do that. Although my husband doesn't like me to do it alone because of the risks involved but thankfully I did it today.

You are very talented Manju. I hope the paintings are nicely varnished now. Yes I used to oil paint when I was very young. I no longer do, but wish I could have the time to do so. I used to like to paint sceneries in oil.

I used to like to draw cartoons. I have done some computer art before and put it on my website. If you want you can take a look at it at this link:
