Cinq Terre

On our last day in Italy we decided to go to Cinq Terre (Five lands) in the Ligurian region of Italy. There is a collection of small colourful pastel painted villages built into the steep rocky crevices. Some villages around this area are only reachable on foot. After reading much about the area and how to get around we decided to go to a major town called La Spezia and catch a boat up the coast passing each village on the way. One of the little villages the boat could not call into because the sea was a bit too choppy. After spending some time in the last village we then caught the train back towards La Spezia stopping off at a few of the villages on the way. The trip up the coast was quite refreshing with the sun beaming down on our faces against the sea breeze. Every so often a small amount of sea water sprayed through the air. Not enough to make us wet thankfully. The little roads inside some of the villages are very steep and extremely crowded with tourists. The trains were packed but it all added to the fun of getting from one village to the next one. The area has been designated a national park and walkers can purchase a ticket to walk along the coastal route to each of the villages. A walk from Manarola to Cornigula ends with a walk up 368 steps. Some of the walks can be quite steep but the views are spectacular. The five villages are called. Monterosso al Mare Vernazza Corniglia Manorola Riomaggiore. Each village is quite picturesque some are very steep and the houses cut into the rugged rock face. We had a beautiful time here although I doubt I would go again especially during the summer months it would be too crowded for my liking. This is a very beautiful area to visit and well worth the effort. The photo is taken from the boat. You can see how pretty the villages appear.

I had the habit to the steps living in Monte-Carlo, that once was part of the Italian region of Liguria. Those little villages are very colorful, but too crowded.

@garymarsh6 Portofino was more popular when I was a teenager, now Cinque Terre is the "fashion place" where to go. People are pretty dumb.

@LadyDuck I think I preferred Portofino Anna but Cinq Terre is very pretty too.

I don't really like crowds but I am so pleased to have visited Anna. You know last year I went to Portofino and although it was quite busy it was not as busy as Cinq Terre. I do not even want to imagine what it is like in the summer when it is really hot and crowded. I would hate that!

Oh wow, Gary! Those buildings look like they are holding each other up! I wouldn't mind visiting there, but everything looks so steep and precarious. @garymarsh6 how did your feet survive that trek?

We walked and walked and walked all over the place while we were in Italy. We had a great day there but so did thousands of other tourists. It was jammed packed! My feet were very tired by the end of the five days!

@JudyEv Don't mention bread to me I know exactly what you mean. Lovely French stick and butter with some nice strawberry jam for breakfast with some decent coffee is my idea of heaven!

@garymarsh6 In France, I could have lived on bread and butter. It was SOOO good. Each morning at the caravan parks you could usually buy a bread roll or croissant. It was just the plain bread that I liked so much.

The village looks really good. What a nice view you would get from one of those homes in that village.

Italy is a beautiful country with many beautiful little villages like this along the coast but these five villages are exceptional due to the difficulty of getting there and how unique they are.

Italy has the most picturesque little villages along the coastline that make you want to live there, however the climbing would not suit my creaking old knees

You would not want to forget anything off your shopping list. If you did you would just have to let it go.

It would be lovely to interview a resident there, to find out if he/she really likes living in that beautiful area, sharing it most of the time with tourists.

They would probably think all tourists are a nuisance but the bring much money to the area which would be very welcome.

OH my the paths were really steep to me it almost felt as if it were vertical walking up the roadway. Although it was really steep I would have hated to go shopping and find I had forgotten something at the bottom and I lived at the top!

Thank you Val. I love to share these places especially for people who are not able to see them. I love your photos and articles about New Zealand and I really hope one day to visit New Zealand. It is so far away from us. We are literally at opposite ends of the world but through Mylot we can share the beauty of this wonderful world.
