I have always thought of tulips as being the official announcer letting us know that spring is here. Typically that is their job. I have always loved to see the beautiful green of the leaves poking their heads up through the cold ground. At least that's how it was when I was living up north. Of course I was never able to grow them. Oh, I tried several times but always was disappointed. I never understood why until one day a neighbor clued me in. She finally told me one day that she would see me planting the tulip bulbs one day and the next day she would see the squirrels happily digging them up and running away with them in their mouth. Talk about dumb. It never occurred to me that they were being kidnapped by the squirrels. I still love tulip but I don't try to grow them. Occasionally I will buy some and put them in a vase and enjoy them but I have given up on trying to keep the squirrels away. By the way, did you now that another favorite snack for squirrels is Ornamental Cabbage?

@HazySue I've never thought of them as pesky. We have a lot of them here. I watched a couple chasing each other in the tree out front this morning.

@just4him I think they are adorable most of the time. But when they steal my plants and bulbs, to me they are little peats.

I think that they sell baskets where you can put the bulbs in there and then in the ground . So that way the squirrels do not get to them.

I always put the bulbs in baskets, because you have to take them out to a dry cool place after blooming time and to replant the following year.

I didn't know that @marlina I will have to look into them if I ever decide to try planting them again.

Those are lovely, are they yours? I always like the daffodils as a sign of spring here.

They aren't mine. I have not gotten the knack of growing them. I lie the daffodils and crocus too.

Do you live in a cold part of the USA? Where would that be? In Central Europe, tulip time is already over.

It's over here too. I thought about tulips because I received some for Mother's Day.

It's pretty hard to get them to grow when they are sitting in the belly of a squirrel.

@HazySue I believe you on that Susan. Do you have a porch that they do not approach where you can grow them?

My mother planted some very unique tulips. Striped like peppermint candies. She could grow anything.

Tulips and the beginning of spring came to mind because of the tulips I received for Mother's Day.
