It Doesn't Work

It really shouldn't surprise me. In the past anything I got from my parents generally didn't work, so why should now be any different. My daughter called me the day before Mother's Day to ask me to teach her to sew. I am thrilled and excited to do so. However, after working for a couple hours this afternoon, I've determined Mom's sewing machine doesn't work. I got it threaded. I read the directions over several times. That isn't the problem. It doesn't sew. Yes, I got the thread to come up from the bobbin, but when I step on the foot pedal, nothing happens. The needle just goes but the material doesn't move, it stays in one place. I even changed the presser foot, and still nothing. So, I did the next best thing. I just ordered a new machine online. I'll have it in a week and then I can teach my daughter how to sew. It's a Singer. It aggravates me because I had three sewing machines before I moved. One was mine I bought several years ago, might even have had it since before I was divorced, not sure. I know it worked. I also had another sewing machine I got from a yard sale. I never used that one, so I don't know about it, and then there was Mom's. I got rid of the other two because I thought it would be wonderful to have Mom's sewing machine. I was wrong. Now, I'll need to call my daughter when I know she's home from work and let her know I have a new machine coming in a week and then I'll be able to teach her. I know she's excited to learn. She's called me a couple times about it. I hate disappointing her, and I have no intention of doing so. It will just be a minor delay. I will teach her to sew on a sewing machine I know works. Have you had any disappointments lately? Thanks for reading.

That is a shame that it didn't work. I would have wanted to keep the one from my mother as well. The only disappointment I've had is when my husband asked if I wanted to go to Hawaii in November during the week that I have off. I was all excited and said yes. Then he said "just kidding". I was so pissed!

I would be too. I hope you get there some day. I've only spent two days in Hawaii. Once on the way to Guam, and once on the way home, though the trip home was only an hour layover.

@NJChicaa I agree, you need that reward for school survival. Another reward would be to convince him a trip to Hawaii would be a great reward also for surviving the school year.

@just4him We could definitely do it in November if we saved some money. He told me we could do it if I got a summer job. No freaking way. I've taught for 16 years. My summers off are my rewards for surviving the school year!

My expensive (but bought at a big discount) hand held vacuum cleaner has emptied its battery and we can't remember where we put the charger.

I hope you find it. I hate when I lose something and can't find it. It always shows up though when I'm not looking for it and in the strangest places.

Sounds like emptying my parents house. My oldest sister summed it up. It's either broken, worn out or broken and worn out.

@Morleyhunt Your father came from the era of the Great Depression and they don't throw anything away. I inherited that quality. I'm a pack rat, but I'm trying to get rid of the stuff that no longer works.

@just4him it sums it up well, but it's frustrating...my father thinks everything is a valuable treasure.

@just4him My first sewing machine was a Brother so I think that is why I prefer them. I like that this one has basic lettering too. One lady paid me $20 to make names for her to put on a quilt she was making. They are very basic though and only one style and size.

I'm sorry you missed exercise two days in a row. I woke with a bad headache so I didn't get to the pool this morning, but I intend to be there tomorrow. I hope you can get your exercise in as well tomorrow. Edit - I just read about your mother and hope she will be better soon.

I'm glad that sewing machines are so easy to purchase these days. I think maybe I'd have tried out mom's machine before giving away all the other ones. Maybe your moms did work at one point in time and it's too bad she didn't get it fixed when it broke down. Maybe one day my own girls will ask me the same thing.

@just4him Well, if you ever run into anything like that again in the future, all you have to do is unplug a few things you don't use all the time, or make sure you're not using bigger appliances like a washer, dryer, dishwasher and then try it out. Although, it does help to know which sockets go to each circuit as you may be able to use certain things fine. We can't use our attic fan while using the washer and dryer at the same time. We can use the washer and dryer together if that's all that's running.

@MarshaMusselman In the old house I found that when the microwave was running at the same time as the washer, it blew the circuit. When I plugged something into the plug that was behind the kitchen door, it blew the fridge and it never got cold enough in the freezer anymore and we lost a lot of food. It was good they tore that house down. I don't see any problems in the apartment. It's well maintained. And if something should happen, I only need to call the office.

I wish I had, but had I plugged anything else in at the old house, it would have blown a circuit. So the pillows I made a couple Christmases ago were all done by hand.

Only a wet basement a couple of day but that is fixed - fingers crossed. I went through a few machines in my sewing years, My daughter learned on my machines too. She has my sewing machine now - I don't want to sew anymore. She doesn't make clothes but makes drapes and things for her home. For repairs and shortening new pants there is a small business in our area run by 5 women and they do a great job with affordable prices.

I'm glad you have your basement fixed. I still love to sew and when my daughter called me this morning she asked if the only reason I bought the new machine was to teach her to sew. Right now it's the main reason, but I love to sew and I know I'll use it in the future. I like having a sewing machine in the house. It's good there's a good business to do alterations close by.

No disappointments. I wished I learned how to sew a patch with my mom. She used to do it all the time by hand and her sewing machine. So glad you got a new one online too.

When ours give trouble, we usually call the technician, but I don't suppose there is one in your area. Then again, it may be difficult to find whatever part that may be needed.

I never thought about calling a technician. I'm sure they're around. Maybe I'll find one and donate this one to them to refurbish and sell.
