Favorite "Sun" Songs #1 - "Sun King"

"This is where it all ends." We have reached the pinnacle of my Favorite "Sun" Songs series. The #1 designation belongs to "Sun King" by The Cult. The Cult has shown up so many times in these music countdowns of mine that I've pretty much exhausted every Wikipedia factoid about the band. They aren't exactly critics darlings, but are quite popular with the alternative crowd. So I went to a source that can't stand them (it has always seemed that they can't stand anybody,) The Trouser Press Record Guide. In the Trouser Press Cult entry, you'll find not so affectionate descriptions such as "drama-drenched vocals," "pseudo-poetic songs," "exciting and not a little stupid," "pretty naff," and "draggy melodies and too much pointless riffing." And I love them anyway. "Sun King," from their platinum 1989 album, Sonic Temple, is, as Trouser Press early on described the band, "hip heavy metal." The Cult has always rocked, but "Sun King" ROCKS. It's about the closest to straight metal the band had recorded up to that point. It performed decently as a single, reaching #18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and #21 on their Modern Rock Tracks chart, while stalling at #39 in the UK. Vocalist Ian Astbury and Guitarist Billy Duffy are in top form (a friend and I actually had a conversation about what a great guitarist Duffy is just the other night, in fact,) and this thing is loud and tight. Hip heavy metal indeed! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I love how "this is where it all ends" is the first sentence uttered at the beginning of the album.

Trouser Press doesn't like anyone...or maybe that's all tongue-in-cheek commentary on their part. I will say, after that "songs that make me cringe" series, I'm better at critical writing. I suppose there are only so many synonyms for "great," but the ways to describe crap are limited only by the imagination. Whatever. I'm sure the band used the reviews to light fires in their fireplaces on cold winter mornings. Good sunny series!! Now, as the Police said, bring on the night and the moon songs!!!

They must sit there and brainstorm. "How else can we bash these guys?"
