Several years ago we noticed a baby frog by our pond and had no idea how it got there or where it came from. Every year since then, Froggy disappears in winter and surfaces in Spring after the thaw. The photo shows him as he is today. I think he is now full grown. We think he overwinters at the bottom of the pool. Just the other day he surfaced again and we are always happy to see him. Interesting fact about frogs: - Some types of frogs typically hibernate under water - The frog's metabolism slows dramatically allowing it to sleep through the winter - Even though Ice crystals form in the body including the bladder, under the skin and the body cavity, there is a high concentration of glucose in the vital organs of the frog that prevents a full on freezing. - Its heart could stop beating and the frog stops breathing but when it warms up, the frozen parts thaw and the lung and heart resume activity. Frogs are indeed remarkable creatures. Facts credit Nature America INC.

That's amazing that their body virtually shuts down but comes back to life again.

@Freelanzer Lake Eyre, in the middle of Australia so miles from any coast very occasionally fills with water after storms in the surrounding area. Within hours there are fish coming out of the mud. Not only that, but hundreds of pelicans and other birds converge on the lake and breed there. How do they know the lake is filling? Despite Man's cleverness, there are still plenty of questions to be answered about such things.

I think I recall you telling us about your little friend there last year, or, a previous year anyway. How cute. I was watching a show on National Geographic the other day about animal oddities and there was one about the wood frog. It is frozen in winter. To the point that 65% of it's body is totally frozen. It's heart stops. When things begin to thaw the heart is given a jolt due to the amount of glucose the body has developed. I think it is amazing.

I wonder how many years a frog lives and if it is indeed the same creature. It may be an offspring.

That is possible. Not sure where the parents are. I only always see the one frog from a tiny thing to the size he is now
