I Shrunk!

I had my pre-op appointment this afternoon, which took way longer than I expected. The actual appointment itself didn't take long, but it took them forever to call me back, despite the fact that I was the only person waiting to be seen. My appointment was supposed to be at 1 p.m. and I didn't get called back until after 2:30. So far I'm not impressed with this particular surgery center. Anyway, once I did get called back I had to be weighed and have my height measured. To my shock I discovered that I have shrunk by more than an inch! I have been under the impression that I was 5'6 3/4 inches since I was 13. So I have been saying I was 5'7 for the past 20 years. Today I measured at only 5'5 1/2 inches, more than a full inch shorter than I previously believed. I don't know if the nurse somehow measured me wrong or if I actually shrank. This news displeases me, as it was always my goal as a young girl to be tall. I was annoyed enough as it was that I stopped growing once I hit 5'7 (my goal was to be 6' "Like a man,") but now I'm going backwards! I'm only 33, I should not be shrinking yet! At this rate I'll be 5'3 or shorter in my old age. Now if only the rest of me would shrink to catch up with my receding height!

I'm 5'3... i don't believe in people shrinking though. Cause.. where does the body go?

Our bodies settle as we age due to gravity, our spinal discs compressing, or sometimes Osteoporosis.

@1creekgirl Yes, and osteoporosis runs in my mom's family, which is a bit worrisome as it seems I've already lost an inch.

We all lose height eventually. I tower above my mom now and she used to be my height. I know some people lose it earlier on than others. I am sure a bunch of things play a part in that.

Yeah, my dad used to be 5'2 and now he's barely 5'. Although I do have to wonder if maybe their measuring chart just isn't accurate. Maybe they don't have it lined up on the wall right. Because I have never been 5'5, not since I was like 11 or 12 years old. Unless my spine is starting to curve or something. That just baffled me that the nurse kept insisting I was only 5'5 when I've always been 5'7, at least since the age of 13 (possibly younger than that. I stopped growing by 7th grade.)

@Srbageldog Yeah, that's weird. I got most of my height between 8th and 9th grade. I gained like 4 inches that summer.

I may have shrunk by 1/2 inch for my entire life it seems, but I can't really get an accurate measurement. Yeah docs offices often screw up on height, weight and blood pressure among other things. You may not have shrunk as much as you thought.

Maybe they measured you wrong. At 33 you should not shrink.

That is what I'm thinking. This particular medical group has a bad reputation (I know their scales are always off because my mom works at one of the facilities and complains about that) so it wouldn't surprise me if their measuring chart isn't positioned on the wall properly.

We do lose height as we age. I'm an inch shorter than I was most of my adult life, but I'm older than you. I think gravity plays a big part.

My dad has lost two inches from his height as he's gotten older. You're probably right about gravity playing a part.

I thought I was five six, and that is what is on my license, but i am in fact five seven. Maybe i found the height you lost.

@thislittlepennyearns Aha! So that's where it went! My license says 5'6 too, even though I've always known I was 5'7 (well, I think it was 5'6 3/4 inches, to be exact. But close enough.)
