She built our house and wanted to see it one more time

I was working in the front yard today when a gentleman came up to me and asked if I was the owner of the house. I said yes and he told me that he used to live here and that his parents built the house. I was shocked and please at the same time. It was like going back in time. He also said that his mom is now in her 90's and would like to look at the house one more time. "She is in the car" he said, "can she come?" I said sure. They asked a lot about the house, told stories about the maple tree she planted which is now massive and thought we took good care of the house. The parents moved to a different province after they sold the house 20 years ago and apparently every time they came back to the city to visit family and their son, they would pass by the house. This is the first time they asked us to see the house and take pictures. I invited them inside to take a quick look around and she noted the chandelier was still there. It was an interesting visit and I was happy to grant the wish of the person who built our house - to see it one more time. Have you ever gone back to visit a house you once lived in?

I've only looked from the outside, never asked to go in. You handled the situation with compassion and kindness - well done.

What a good memory for the old lady. I can't imagine how grateful she was being able to see the house she built. It's so kind of you too. My parents haven't move house since I was born, so I still always go back to the house where I was growing up. It's full of good memories too, though we didn't build it.

Yes she and her son were both happy. Her husband is ailing so he couldn't make the trip but says she can't wait to update him

Not recently but when mother was alive, I did. Now my niece lives there and it is not the same. Both you and that lady must have truly enjoyed that encounter.

How nice that you were able to grant this wish for this 90 year old to see her house again. Many times I wish I had been able to go back and visit the house my grandparents lived in as it held so many fond memories for me.

That was kind of you to let the people in to see the house - and particularly inside, when you weren't expecting them. I'm sure the mother would be very thrilled to have seen her old home.

Yes, but never inside...Only with a sort of looking back into the past feeling from outside. It was very nice of you to say yes to them

That was very sweet of you. It probably made her day, did you hear any cool stories about the house?

One story she told is that when she planted the maple tree her neighbor told her that it will grow very tall and the branches will drop their leaves on her roof. Her response was "I won't be here when that happens". Just a couple years ago the neighbor had to have the branches hanging over her roof trimmed.

Well the house I was born in now belongs to someone else. I do sometimes pass from its nearby places but I do not visit it any longer.

I guess it all depends on what meaning it has for you and how long you lived there. Then some just like to forget and move on.

the house meant so much to them that they keep checking on it when they're in the area. maybe the previous times they came no one was out. i think being told you took good care of the house and retained things like the chandelier would be the best compliment to receive.

It was a compliment, imagine if they had seen their old home turned into a dump that wouldn't have been nice.

Very sweet of you. Unfortunately the house I grow up with is a historical house. They razed the house and built it again in another province. So can't really visit it anymore that its gone.

Oh that is too bad. Didn't know they could get rid of historical houses and building it somewhere else is not the same
