"Would you give money to a beggar boy?"

A young boy aged 10 got into a jeepney that I am riding in, he has this piece of paper and laid on my right thigh. The handwritten message says, "Ate, Kuya pahingi ng pera pagkain ko lang po. Salamat po." (Sister or brother: Can I have some money for me to eat? Thank you). I gave him some coins. But I feel pity on him. "Are you going to give something to him? Image Credit: Shavkat

If someone begs so that they can eat, they should accept food instead of money.

I agree. There is no chance since we are riding in a public transportation. If I am on the street, I will definitely buy some food instead of money.

@MALUSE This reminds me of an old B/W movie about a beggar who lived in a mansion. Sickening.

@marlina The problem with beggars is always the mistrust one has. The few genuine cases are hard to find - or not at all. In Germany, beggars are organised. Nearly all come from Balkan countries (former Yugoslavia). They're taken to city centres in the morning by car and fetched again in the evening. The beggars themselves are poor sods. Their bosses are well off.

Yes I would but I would not make a habit of it either. They use children here also. its really hard to know what to do about this kind of thing.

@lovingangelsinstead21 I am aware that children were being abused in begging on the street. I wasn't used to seeing them. In my city, these children cannot able to do this.

I can speak first hand of the poverty in the Philippines. Manila is a city with extreme opposites, obscene wealth and abject poverty co-existing side by side. The government cannot tackle this alone and that's where so many of the churches and smaller community based projects play such an important role. This is one of my passions and we are looking at various mechanisms to allow these smaller unregistered projects access to funding from abroad. Spend the money in the right places and we reduce the need for children to beg on the streets. Raising the profile of the smaller community run self help programs is critical to helping the poor drag themselves up by their own bootlaces.

The poverty is real, no doubt about it. But there are poor that are also being used by Syndicates. I feel sorry for them because Parents simply didn't care specially if they didn't have plan or money to raise kids. There are times that I give something to them.

I think our politicians forgot what's really the problem in the Philippines. They are so busy scrutinizing each other.

Of course I will give him some money... But with his age, isn't he supposed to be at school? I was told that some adults abused the children by making them beg for money...

It is summer vacation, my friend. I do think it is possible that some adults are abusive and let the children beg. All I know, they've been doing this because of being marginalized in the society.

Sometimes their parents send them to do it. With some it is a business, but I won't know the true story therefore I'll give.

I think it is better to give than think what if he really needs to survive.
29 May 17
I would give what I have at that time, either money or eatable. But not to stop with that i would enquire about his condition and provide any information on his education or place to stay....

In the capital, there are so many children like this. The government is too busy dealing with so many projects. At some instances, they were not successful.

I pity those beggars in the streets and in the market especially the differently abled ones, if only I have much money I could just let them stay in my house and give them food,

it depends. if i see the beggar strong and healthy, i won't. he might use the money for 'cara y crus', which is so common here.
