I am cruel as a stepmother!

JEEEZZZ!!! I was just talking about getting a dog I would love dearly and some mylotters thought I was a cruel person only because I would have the dog outside as everyone who lives in a house in Santiago does. Thinking about it, I understand that people don´t realize that the way other people behave depend a lot on their costums, their climate and traditions. And thinking it over, I realize that many world problems arise from the fact that we don´t try to understand other people´s ways. I have been in the US for instance and the amount of snow and cold is unbearable for me. I don´t need central heating and use one gas heater in winter and that´s all. I don´t use AC in summer either, as there is never a suffocating heat here. In this climate, not only vineyards and fruit trees blossom, but dogs are happy outside the houses where they have more room to romp.

Our cat lives outside. He can come and go as he pleases in the garage because there is a little cat door for him. He comes in the house a lot, but he goes outside if we are not home and when we go to bed. Many dogs live outside here too. They have to have a warm place in the winter but many farmers don't have dogs in their house even in Canada.

@paigea When animals are not comfortable, they let us know. I never let Misty "freeze" in winter here. Not even plants freeze in mid winter.

@marguicha The sled dogs have warm fur coats and know how to dig into the snow to keep warm. But I am sure they have warm places to sleep now a days.

Hello Marguicha. I hope you saw my response on your discussion before. I support you and understand. It is your prerogative. My Father raised German Shepherds and I understand your climate is different.

I would not be able to use the kind of clothes people wear in the North Pole. Climmate is different. And age changes us too.

@TiarasOceanView I was troubled by the use of the word "cruel".

I don't think you are cruel. Perhaps I shall say that you are just logical. In fact it is better for people to keep the big dogs outdoor. It is nothing wrong with it. Big dogs need more space and they are much more independent. Besides, they can guard the house when they live in the garden.

@marguicha I forget that some places can snow and it will be so cold.

Too many do not understand that this is an international site, we have different weather, different culture, different habits. The dog of my mother-in-law has always been outside, he had his little wooden house and he was a very happy dog.

In my country dog houses are sold. I bought one for Misty when she was alive, but she wanted to sleep near where I was. So I had to put a sort of rug. The place of the terrace was covered.

@LadyDuck Misty was protected too. But she also had her likes and dislikes. I accepted her as whole. If she preferred to sleep near my bedroom, I made sure that she was covered and had a rug there. Not that she cared for rugs: her fur coat was something I coveted in winter.

@marguicha The dog of my MiL was outside in the garden and the dog house was near the porch, so it was even more protected.

I like seeing dogs outside. Poor things don't want to be cooped up inside.

If the climate is right, they prefer to be out. German shepherd dogs were originally dogs to tend to sheep.

I agree. I don´t have the experience of living in a BIG house as that is not possible in a big city.

That is the same thing in the Caribbean. Dogs are mostly outside . Some have lovely kennels to sleep in.

My daughter´s dog has a nice kennel. But he doesn´t like it. So he brings out his blanket every night and sleeps outside the main door. Claudia makes his bed every day and every day he does the same.

My Misty had claustrophobia. She hated to be inside, even when there was a thunder storm.

@allknowing I would not keep my dog leashed. But some people do. And I would not keep an animal inside a cage.

@marguicha As you have rightly said in your post it depends on the size of the house. My house has a fairly large area. My hall alone is around 500 sq. ft. You are right they need space. Since your dog will not be leashed and kept inside a cage all is well.

I sure wouldnt let a dog stay outside for more than a few hours a day, but its not me wanting the dog. So not my decision.

Where do you live? How many square ft. does your house have? How much garden do you have? Those are questions that arise. In my country we don´t keep cows inside in the country. No need to.

@Courtlynn It is different. We have no coyotes or bears here. We have robbers though. This is a big city with several millions of people. AND with a very mild climate.

@marguicha doesnt matter where you live. Its still not safe or right as dogs are supposed to be pets / family. Not just any animal. And dogs and cows are two different aniamls. Cows belong outside, but in shed things like horses. Not in a house. And i said i wouldnt do it. But that its your decision so whats with the questions.

There is such a thing as Cultural Sensitivity which must be observe by everyone in myLot in fairness to everyone. I wonder why the police or SWAT Team or those in the military use sniffing dog/trained dog in their security operation? Are they also as cruel as step mother or step father by analogy by using these dogs?
