Back yard dogs

Which would you say is worse: having a dog tied to a tree in the yard, goes on a walk occasionally and gets talked to daily, or a dog that's running loose in the yard and never gets attention?

Hi welcome to mylot , I feel that one can easily strike a balance by tying up the dog during day time , taken for a walk twice a day and also leave him free at night . thats what we do and for us he is very much part of our household since once in a way he likes to come in and sit with us and contribute in his own way when we watch TV or chatting ..

That sounds like a good idea, maybe it can work for someone else as well.

Both would get the WORSE category from me, my pup is in the house with me and we go outside together so she can do her business and then we play. Dogs are pack animals and need the company of other dogs or people. If there are 2 dogs loose in a backyard then at least neither is alone.

It depends on the temperament of the dogs @Memarie209 I have friends who regularly adopt older dogs, mostly males, and so far they haven't had a problem. They are indoor/outdoor dogs and are treated equally .... they even have a kitty and so far it's worked out really well. It does take time to introduce older dogs to one another but that means you have to show patience. Since dogs are pack animals it's important never to let them be all alone for a long time because it will ruin the pups ability to socialize .... it works the same way with people, ever run into someone who isn't around other people very often? Did you notice they generally have a hard time connecting with others?

That's true, but what if they fight. Dogs that aren't raised together will eventually fight.

I think best is to keep the dog free and let it do whatever it wants.

Neither! Dogs don't deserve to be tied up, they are social animals and want to be part of the family. Don't get a dog if you're going to ignore it, either...that's cruel and inhumane. Dogs will try to please their owners until their dying breath...they offer unconditional love and never hold grudges against us. They are fiercely loyal and protective of their himans. They deserve love and companionship back. How or why people can abuse animals is beyond me.
