WRONG OR RIGHT?

News coming out of a sister island is that a 15 year-old male student was held down by three teachers and his hair forcibly trimmed by a fourth. This happened on the school compound after the student arrived for classes with his hair not trimmed - low enough. During the ensuing struggle, the student sustained a cut lip, and three of the teachers are now facing the courts on a charge of assault. What is your opinion on this? Were the teachers wrong or right? - and how would you have reacted if that student was your child ?

What they did is wrong and I would have surely not appreciated if that was my son. If they had something to say, they had to call the parents and talk with them.

The teachers were deinfitely in the wrong, if it was policy then a warning should have been issued. Even though how you want to wear your hair should be your choice not the schools. They had no right to lay their hands on that student. If that was my child I would be furious and definitely be pressing charges against them.

They say he was warned. The parents say he did go to the barber - but obviously the teacher was not pleased with the result. In that case, the parents should be called for a meeting - that was an obvious violation of the student's rights.

@Kandae11 yes I agree. The parents should have been called. It never should have gotten physical.

@Kandae11 Parents should take care of the way the kids go to school unless there´s a law about a certain haircut. But even then, there´s no reason to do that to a person.

I really would not have liked it to be my son. We'll see what happens in court.

He should have been sent home if his hair broke dress code. There was no reason for teachers to cut it, let alone hold him down to do it. The teachers should be punished.

Here in the USA the school would send you home till you got yourself to code, if you did not do it the parents face the board. I would sue those teachers but have them arrested first.

Dress codes are important but there are better ways of handling the problem. As a teacher I was always told to "teach but don't touch." If it had been my son, I would have been standing before the school board the next day.

@allknowing Impossible to do it online. But seriously, I did hear the headmistress of another school talking as if it wasn't a big deal and that rules are rules.

I think the teachers are not the right in this situation. It is better to impose the school rules to this student.

That is so wrong, wrong, wrong! Here they'd face charges and get fired. They should have known better. There are certain things that teacher should know. They should be thankful that it wasn't my child!!!

Those teachers were in the wrong. They have no right to decide how a person should wear their hair or their clothes. If it had been my child, I would have the teachers up on charges as well.

@Kandae11 Yes they do and if there isn't anything in their handbooks about the length of their hair, they should have left him alone.

I can't even imagine how they thought they could get away with something like that. Send the kid home with a suspension until he has a proper haircut. Problem solved.

@Kandae11 It seems to me that by showing up without the haircut he has refused to get it cut.

If he had refused to get it cut at a barber - then suspension would have been the route to follow.

Kids nowadays are very stubborn and don't listen to their teacher or their parents but still this is not a good thing to do what they did with the guy... Still they must have called his parents and complain and rest whatever happens was none of their business.. They could dismiss him temporarily from the school if he was not listening

I would be suing the pants off the school. I understand schools have dress codes, but the teachers are not licensed barbers. So that is also a health and licensing violation. They are not the parents of the student. That is invading his private and personal space. I could see him being suspended if it was dress code violation. If it was just their taste. . . whoa. . . they had best keep it to themselves. It sounds and feels like they just were needing to show "who is boss" and were kind of power mad.

This is definitely not right. How could the teachers do something like that. They could have called the parents and advised about the child's behaviour. Are they teachers or hairdressers.
