Favorite "Moon" Songs #1 - "The Killing Moon"

Another music countdown comes to an end. #1 in my Favorite "Moon" Songs series is "The Killing Moon" by one of the all-time great alternative bands, Echo and the Bunnymen. From their 1984 album, Ocean Rain, "The Killing Moon" is, as vocalist Ian McCulloch said on one of the band's live albums, the best song he ever wrote. And face it, the guy has written a lot of good songs during the course of his career. The song, musically, is based on David Bowie's "Space Oddity," but played backwards. Throw in some nifty strings and you've got the makings of a gorgeous song. "The Killing Moon" has been covered several times, notably by Pavement, The Quakes, and Grant-Lee Phillips. You can also find it on the soundtrack for the movie Grosse Point Blank, and the video game Rock Band 3. Best song McCulloch ever wrote? Indeed. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I've seen them three times. At Red Rocks, at the Gothic Theater, and the Bluebird.

@TiarasOceanView - At Red Rocks, it was them, New Order, and Gene Loves Jezebel. At the Gothic it was with Psychedelic Furs.

I remember Pavement, talk about a forgotten band. I do have to also say, i respect these countdowns for the people that can do them. Always pretty neat to find out who is number one and the great thing is corporate world does not do it like this. I see why this is number one and you know who reminds me of these guys. Tiger Army kind of sounds like this song with their new music.

@teamfreak16 Just their last album, not their old stuff. All though that is good too, but different from this style of music you just played. Last album was totally different. They had a series with lead singer and it was quite fascinating with the lead singers mindset on that one and how he paid respect to the ones before him. Was quite refreshing to see.

Now I have to find a way to play "Space Oddity" backwards to see if it does sound like this song. One of the true classics of the 80s, and one of the classics of 120 Minutes. Great series. Now for the stars and planets.....

If there were an alternative Hall of Fame, I'd put these guys in in the first class.

Here's a moon song on my favorites list. "Dancing In The Moonlight" by one hit wonders King Harvest from 1972.

That's one of my favorite songs from my daughter's generation. I listened to it just last week. I didn't know the history of the song, interesting!

They are still together, but they were popular in the 80's. With the alternative music crowd.
