Making ourselves feeling more responsible towards our healthcare system.

It seems that some bad people are abusing our French healthcare system, so, while we had nothing to pay a few years ago, we have now something to pay. On May 1st, they rised the price we have to pay for a doctor’s consultation : it was 1 Euro, it is now 2 Euros ! This 100% rise is very dissuasive, it is quite sure that people will not consult anymore a doctor if they do not need it. I am receiving my bill from the hospital last April after my stroke. So, reception to the emergencies (25.32 Euros, this is very cheap !), medical consultations, 4 days of hospitalisation at 828 Euros/day, a few hundreds for various medical analysis and examinations, a bundle price for drugs.... They do not give the total amount, I would have to use a calculator to know it, but my brain tells me that it is a bit expensive. However there is the total of what I have to pay, I have to pay a bill of... 16.62 Euros. OMG ! What an amount ! I will have to work hard several months at myLot to pay that. I feel a lot more responsible. So responsible that I am asking myself if I would not be able to find a hospital near a beach to spend a week of (medical) holidays ? I do not like hospitals enough to do that, but I am starting to understand why some people love them in France.

When I went last Wednesday to the hospital with my husband for his physiotherapy, we met a friend, who works there, who asked if we plan a vacation. I replied I am thinking to book a double bedroom there. They have a beautiful park, great food, air conditioning and perfect silence, it sounds a good place for a vacation.

We have nice rest homes in the middle of forests or near the sea, but the problem for me is that they are still hospital with white blouses inside. I think I would be authorized to spend a couple of weeks in one of them actually, but I would not like to do it.

@LadyDuck Same for me. I have an allergy to nurses and doctors, but it becomes worst inside a hospital. I will have to take a few pills for the rest of my life, and I will have to see my doctor every 3 months to renew the prescription, while I was not seeing him once a year, it is not that bad for the moment.

@topffer I do not like hospitals, not even the best ones. There is a sense of fear being inside, even if you are not sick.

La maison de repos would be wonderful to continue with physio with good food fresh clean air and yes it is very cheap in France. My sister in law spent a couple of months in the mountains following her accident. We do not really have such a system here in the UK however we do not pay any additional fees unless of course you want to go to a private hospital.

I can ask to my doctor to spend a couple of weeks in a resting place in a mountain or sea area and it would certainly be accepted by the social security, but these places are still hospital-like buildings, with nurses and doctors, and I prefer to not see white blouses as long as possible. We used to not pay anything except a small amount equivalent to the food, untill they decided to make us more responsible. But the amount to pay is so low that it looks like an incentive.

System here is more or less the same as yours for most things. However they do have exception not quite sure what they are but some of the bills can be quite hefty as I have heard some people explain to me before. Their food if you survive it you are very healthy indeed and I mean the food here not there. A lot of people from overseas come here to be treated for some reason and perhaps its like you say a Holiday medical cure thing.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Teeth are expensive, except with a top complementary health insurance in France. For what I heard they are a lot less expensive in Central Europe, and they do a good job.

Everything is not refunded the same way in any country, but our social security cards are supposed to work in any country inside EU, and I read that there was a kind of medical tourism now in Europe. French are going to Central Europe for their teeth because they refund better than here, and many people are coming in France for surgeries, because it can be done faster. Spain has probably also a specialty where you are better/cheaper than others. I have heard that you were better for glasses than France : we have to wait months for some new glasses, while it seems possible to get new glasses in a few days in Spain.

I now pay attention to caring for my health. Just realized that it's your foundation for everything.

I have been lucky enough to not really have any serious health problem until this year, but I knew that it would happen soon or later with the age. Yes, it is very important to take care of our health.

Now I know why French people like to go back to their country after living overseas. With that sort of 'incentive' in health care, I wouldn't mind migrate to France (but for the philosophy exam high school kids must take!).

You do not need to be French, it is applied to everybody living here since at least 3 months, including undocumented aliens. When you ask to French living in foreign countries what they miss more, they always respond that it is French food. But, yes, if they were working in a country where they had to pay an expensive health insurance, they can save on that by retiring in France.
