Painful Memories or Happy Memories?

June 19, 2017 2:14am CST
I'm just wondering if people retain more of the painful memories over the happy ones? Because, more often, some or most people could recall more of the painful experiences than of the happy ones. A lot of people are experiencing hardships, or even depression nowadays. Could it be that the brain retains more of what makes people unhappy? There are times that we succumb to the painful memories, and we can't help it sometimes. Sometimes, we forget hot to be happy because of the painful experiences. Could it be that we remember the painful experiences more than the happy ones? What's your take on this?

@jainaproudmemoore If I can eat sweets, why should I eat chillies? I don't forget painful memories, but prefer recalling sweet memories only.Painful memories are lessons.

@jainaproudmoore You are absolutely right. It's really easier said than done.If you are passing through extremely painful experiences,it is really very difficult to recall happy moments.I am fortunate not to have undergone such extremely painful experiences so far.

Just wondering, what if one's daily routine reminds of the painful ones? Or the person has had bad one experience after another? If you were that person, how do you turn your thoughts around? Of if your friend goes through this, what advice would you give him/her?

@else34 Thanks for your response. I know someone who seem stuck in the sadness. I tried to make the person feel positive but it seems hard for that person to move away. Perhaps, the first part of getting up is the hardest...

I think bad things hit you much harder than the pleasure good things bring. So we kind of hang on them for longer!

Probably. Maybe that's the reason why sometimes, it's hard to move on from bad thoughts. It's kind of wrong though, but sometimes, we just can't help it.

@jainaproudmoore true. It's wrong but this is how it is. We cling to heartaches more than they deserve.

@shaynas And it's also even harder for the person to feel deserving of happiness.

I don't think so. It depends on the character of a person. Some people are optimists, others are pessimists. It's their nature.

Hmm... Perhaps, yes. It might also depend on the person's nature. But what if the person has had one bad experience after another, and the daily routine reminds of the bad memories? How should one swing his/her thoughts away from the awful thoughts?
