Maybe give them something they can comfort themselves with in the privacy of their home, like a homecooked meal or cookies or a fancy coffee or tea you know they like. Most people still like "care packages" however standoffish they may seem in public.

These people wanted to save their pride and ego. The more you help them, the more they feel inferior. Might as well just tag along to make them feel happy even if they are broke but don't insist on buying.

Nothing, maybe this is the least we can do to our friend, maybe this is the reason why they are acting like nothing happened because they wanted to act like normal.
