I get a cleaning every 6 months. it is never painful. this time they found some things that need to be fixed. so I have to go back soon and get some repair work. that is not always painless :(

You either have very sensitive teeth and gums or you need a new dental hygienist. How long do you go between cleanings? If you go every 6 months like they suggest, you won't have as much plaque build-up and it won't hurt as much to have your teeth cleaned. There are also more natural ways of taking care of your teeth. Diet plays a big part in the health of your mouth. Oil pulling is good for your teeth. And, of course, flossing or using a water pic every day can keep your teeth from building up that nasty plaque.

I go to the dentist every six months to get my teeth cleaned and have been on that schedule for the past 12 years. Prior to that I had not been to the dentist in about ten years. Luckily I did not have any problems during that time or as a result of not going, but that first cleaning on my first trip back was pretty extensive! It was not a deep cleaning and I am lucky to have never needed that procedure.
