Water Heater Isn't

A couple days ago my missus complained she was running out of hot water before the tub filled completely for her bath. I told her we probably need an element replaced in our water heater. Today, she reminded me she was still running out of hot water. This morning I called the plumber. Now, I know I should be able to do something as simple as replace a heating element in our water heater. I won't for a couple of reasons. The first reason is I just don't want to do it myself. The second reason is, even if I do replace it myself I would not be able to tell if there are other problems that need to be addressed. So, a plumber is on the way to fix it for me, and to make sure there are no other problems he needs to take care of. My missus used to expect me to fix such things myself. I used to try. After about the third time we had to call an expert to fix what I'd unsuccessfully tried to fix, she now insists I call a professional who knows what to do and will do it right the first time. Are there repairs you will make around your house, and are there things you always call an experienced tradesman to fix?

My husband can do a lot of repairs but I don't let him LOL! There are things a pro needs to do. Problem is hey are not easy to find around here. We have a spare hot water heater so if something happens no problem.

I have a friend who is an electrician, and I hire him to do my electrical work. He practically begged my wife not to let me do anything more than replace a light bulb, and then under her supervision, LOL. Another friend of ours does carpentry on the side. Though they offer, I won't let friends do work for me for free as it is their profession, just as they never let me help them with their taxes and accounting without expecting some form of payment. The plumbing company I call has been around for years and years and has always been reliable and reasonable in their rates.

@AbbyGreenhill With my psychology training it can be a challenge. See, I won't change the lightbulb unless it really wants to change.

We pay for annual maintenance for the heating system and the hot water is supplied by the same heater. I call them any time of the day or the night if I have a problem. There are things that I can fix, but not this kind of appliances.

We have such a contract on our heating and a/c, but the water heater is electric and not tied to the heating system.

@DWDavis Our heating system is a gas system and the water is tied to it. We have no a/c.

I used to do more home repair and improvement around the house, but age and arthritis have made it more difficult. That and a couple times when we had to call someone to fix something I thought I'd fixed, but hadn't, quite.

Our kitchen sink was clogged. My mother insisted that she could fix it. It finally can unclogged a few days ago. The AC unit went out one year. We called a professional for it.

Clogged sinks I can usually handle. As long as it doesn't involve hooking up electricity or welding pipe.

I am hopeless with a wrench. When you live in an apartment, then repair issues etc is part of what you are paying rent for. If you are a home owner, then you are responsible. Even a clogged drain needs a pro who has a snake.

A clogged drain is one of the things within my ability range to tackle. But there is a reason home owners are known as home moaners, because it seems there is always something to be fixed.

Since we have moved out into the middle of nowhere and into a house we have learned a lot of home repairs that we never had to deal with in the apartments.

A house has a way of making you learn things about carpentry, plumbing, and electrical wiring that you never thought you'd need to know. Mostly, it's taught me to hire experts who know what they're doing.

I hope it gets fixed without any issues. My husband does remodeling for a living and handyman things so he is the professional that fixes everything here. Our landlord loves it because if anything goes wrong Johnny can fix it himself.
