Fancy Roundabouts in France

We've been in France two days now and have already managed a visit to the National Horse Stud which is situated at St Lo. We also visited an impressive cathedral in Coutance. Now we're camped on the beach with dozens of other motor-homes. This is an almost free site provided by the region. There are toilets and you can empty toilet canisters here and get water. We hope to use camp-sites of this type every second day or so as we are pretty much self-sufficient. I'd forgotten that many of the roundabouts here have the centres decorated in some way and I hope to perhaps make a slideshow of all the different ones we've seen. As we go round the roundabouts I'm in the ideal position to take photos as we are driving an Irish vehicle but driving on the right hand side of the road. I liked this display of various musical insturments.

In the south they call them roundabouts, but where we are from up north they are called 'circles'. They are the worst places for accidents. Those sound much nicer than the ones in NJ.

Mostly in Australia they work very well but of course you still need to be extra careful - especially in a foreign country and on the 'wrong' side of the road..

Well done, you have chosen the only area where there is no sun. The abuse of roundabouts is a true scandal in France. We are the country of useless roundabouts and useless bridges. A roundabout costs an average 1 million Euros to the taxpayer, and there is a new one build every 3 days. This money is not lost for everybody, but it would be too long to explain. Each new one is a pretext to put some "piece of art" which are sometimes really ugly : a radio/tv channel organized a competition last year, the idea was to find and vote for the ugliest roundabout. I post the picture of the winner, located in Villeurbanne, near Lyon.

@LadyDuck, For being ugly this one is not bad too, because if you look at it, there is no place left for a car to turn around. Or it is perhaps a heliport and not a roundabout?

@topffer I suppose you are right, this is a heliport. I wonder who signed and approved the project.

Some towns have gone to a lot of trouble with their roundabouts.

They are somewhat 'modern' I guess although they've been around a long time now. I think they help the traffic flow as long as everyone obeys the rules.

The 21st of June, Summer Solstice, in France it is the day of the "FĂȘte de la Musique" (The Music Festival), this is the reason of this musical instruments display.

Can be also only a piece of art. Where would we put contemporary art if we had not roundabouts ?

@topffer The beautiful tree they planted on a roundabout not far from home went down during the thunderstorm this night. They are cutting it now to clear the road. I thought it was not the most appropriate treee.

I'm still not used to the roundabouts and there is a great fluffy to get the window down and the camera out when we spot a new one. Yesterday instead of taking a photo I pushed the 'off' button. I had it lined up beautifully too.

I like the first one, but the second one does seem a bit dodgy in the sense of I have got the impression that its going to topple over. Oh well its okay I suppose. Sometimes they do things like that here but only in metalwork mainly and put on the side of the Motorways.

@JudyEv There are mainly flowers and things here and they do keep them well tended also. Nice to look and wonder what they are.

We have some arty stuff on the sides of roads too - not so many in the middle of roundabouts.

It is easy to get photos of them from the passenger seat but it would be hopeless in Australia to do this - unless I steered while Vince took the photo!!

@JudyEv I can only imagine. I have had a couple LONG trips myself. From the East Coast of the USA to Okinawa was the longest. I was almost 7 months pregnant too. Ended up in the hospital for a week after landing. It's a long story.

Thanks. I'm on the side nearest because of the RH drive car in a LH drive country and if there is no traffic Vince drives quite slowly for me. I had a beauty lined up yesterday but then hit the 'off' button instead of taking a photo! Here's one I took for you.

Mostly we don't have any trouble with roundabouts. They do drive them a bit differently here to in Australia but our son put us wise to it.

@judyev I detest French roundabouts. When I lived there different rules applied to different do I dabouts and you never knew which set of rules were in force. Much horn tooting ensued whenever I tried to use one. It's all standardised now and one to its anyway.

We haven't had much trouble at roundabouts. Left turns are worse. We have to cross over to the left then remember to drive on the right. We have a mantra 'keep right, keep right' which helps. We've become very good at three-, four- and six-point turns when searching for a particular shop for parts for the van.

There are only four sites with power but we don't need power every night. There are three huge campsites within about 2kms along this beach. It is very popular with the French too and there are dozens of motor-homes on the road.
