Orton Vinnie doesn't sound like a girls name to you does it?

1940's census
United States

I've heard of girls being named after boys and boys after girls but the name is usually spelled differently and a nickname given to better reflect the person's gender and personality. I wonder what Orton Vinnie's nickname was. Can you see the picture above? Orton Vinnie "stepdaughter" to my great grandfather so she'd be my step great aunt I suppose. Though in those days I wonder if "step" was even recognized, especially when more mothers died giving birth or father's died in war or job accidents. This was for the 1940's census for Forsyth County, NC.

Now there is a name I had never heard not for boy or girl really. It is original that is for sure. Maybe they called her Ort for short or Vin..wow who knows.

I thought of Vin for short but then thought it still seemed boyish. I've heard of these two names, but never together.

@TiarasOceanView I am not sure I like it so much.. I wonder who she might have been named after but I bet I won't ever find out. She's the daughter of my great grandfather's second wife.

Yes, can see it. That is a odd name. I thought it was weird that a naval hero was named Evelyn too. A obvious female name. Often these old names are foreign and don't make much sense to us. And, for some reason I have found it the case with several families I have known down through the years, that the father will give a female child a boy's name.

I guess I should count myself lucky really. I didn't think about it yesterday when I posted this, but I could have just as easily been given a boys name. My father is the 3rd in his line with the same name. Though I suppose his name is easy enough to be made into a female name. William Franklin into Wilhelmena Francine sounds a lot better.

Yes I feel like it's a cross between a back country name and an Italian mobster. I mean, there okay names separately, but not together and not for a girl!

@NJChicaa I saw that too but "Vinic" doesn't really sound like a name, does it? The last letter does look like a cursive C though. Either way what a name!
