An Interesting Approach

It was a sunny morning, about 10AM. That charity store as usual, was crowded with people searching for some good bargains (like I was with out of print books ). Suddenly the tranquil atmosphere was shattered with some loud angry voices. Seemed as it came from a blond shabby and big bone solid woman in her early 40s. She seemed to be in an agitated state, 'Oh my husband, I will kill him! How could he!' The woman aggressively heading towards the back of the store (used for the staff there I think), she loudly angrily asked, 'Are you sure there was no one handing in a big green bag? I left them there, and now he said he gave it away to a charity store. I lost a few paintings, this big..' The calm voice of the shopkeeper could be heard, 'no, no, none like that I am very sure. But if there was, it would have been sorted and gone by now if you don't see any of your things around!' The aggressive voice again, 'ah, this painting, it is mine, and this one, and this one!' The calm voice, 'Oh, you can have them back if you want to...' When the shabby blond woman had left, I heard the shopkeeper's voice whispering to someone close by, 'That woman! That was not the first time she played that trick to get free stuff! One just has to play along unfortunately.' --- A very fascinating approach to get free things from a charity store, don't you think?

I can't understand why they have to play along - just tell her they are on to her!

I have a suspicion that that shopkeeper may not speak the truth. But then again, I don't know the situation or the players in that 'game' very well. I would love to know the truth.

I think that is just awful of her! The shopkeeper should have escorted her out the door, but I guess she was too big boned and solid to go.

Yes, the shopkeeper was less than 5' height, that aggrieving lady about 5'10 - no contest there!

One has to be "pretty low" for resorting to that kind of behaviour.

Cant they say they have the right to refuse service. Becuase technically they don't have to let her in the shop if she has caused trouble before....

I have no clue if that was true or not (I don't know that shopkeeper very well). But you are right, that shopkeeper could keep that woman out, but then again, perhaps she was being diplomatic?

If they know that she is a trickster , they should never give her the stuff.

Fascinating and very low down to try to scam the shopkeepers. Here in my place, she would have been arrested just for causing a disturbance.

Seriously, I would call the police and have that cheap wacko thrown out, stealing from a charity store is the lowest form of stealing.

@YrNemo I guess the lesson learned here is not to let customers walk around with expensive items unless they are paid for.

That shopkeeper told me how a painting with a price tag of $100 was stolen from her last weekend. That lady in her late 20s, elegantly dressed (with beautiful makeups and all), came in, wandering around, checked a few things, asked for that painting, then holding on to it while doing more browsing. The shopkeeper had a phone call suddenly and just turned her back for a few minutes while her assistant, a very young girl, watched the shop on her behalf. That wealthy looking customer just walked straight out with that painting, not paying a cent for it. (The young assistant thought that customer had paid for it.)

@BelleStarr You are right. (That shopkeeper is a very cunning woman, don't know how the heck someone managed to beat her that time. I was a victim of that shopkeeper a few times, over trivial amounts but... well, it is a charity shop after all. )

Oh my goodness @YrNemo , you really do get all kinds. What a pity she keeps getting away with such behaviour.

That wouldn't have worked here if she got away with it once it won't work the next time

What an interesting drama to observe. The shopkeeper is quite wise. True or not, either way he comes away from the situation without trouble.

Oh dear. That is rather low... I hope they stop her after awhile... but what an interesting scene it must have been
