About twenty years ago or so myself and another woman were hosting a weekly genealogical chat to try and help people with their genealogical research. There was one lady that came in to the chat every Wednesday night for about three months and both of us gave her hints. The other host asked her how it was coming a long and the woman replied," I have not started yet." Both my hosting partner and I asked her why and this time she replied," I am scared!" I asked what she was scared of and she said," About what I might find." Another woman came home trying to advise everyone not to dig back in their family's past because it could cause trouble. I asked her why she said that and she explained that she had started doing her genealogical research and went six generations back and to his cousin's wifes husband brother to find out that he had killed herself. She countinued that was too scary because it might be genetic! I told her that cannot happen that many generations back then there was no blood relation there and she still did not get it! LMBO! I had found that my fifth great grandfather had a brother, Thomas and his wife was Elizabeth. They also had a sister named Elizabeth that married a cousin named Thomas, so they all had the same surname. I found a Thomas that had faked his death and remarried. LOL. I have a distant cousin that said there it was no way Thomas from our line because no one in our family would do such a thing....... LMBO! Really? How does she know what these people were like in the 1700's? Even after I showed the years of their childrens births being after his supposed death she was still not able to agree with me.

But, how will these people that are afraid of what they might find ever know the truth. They could have some wonderful people in their background that they will never know about.

much to confusing to me. i tried it once and my dad had an unusual middle name. still i ran into 2 people with the name at the same time married to the same gal, so kind of made it a block for me, oh and they were in 2 different places at once. given that most of it is counted at census back then and anyone could use others identity, you just can't be sure

Yes! In genealogy there are always brick walls (blocks) But yes it gets confusing at times, but it is so addictive. It's a big giant ongoing puzzle!
