That one gun shot

Real late last night, more like about 2 am, my husband and I were up late and we opened the windows since it was so nice outside. Off in the distance we heard a dog barking. Then all of a sudden, we heard 1 gun shot that seemed rather close to us.
It kind of scared us.
This morning, my husband said that after the gun shot, the dog barking totally stopped. I hope the person who shot the gun didn't kill the dog who was barking. Or, maybe the gun shot was a signal to the dog to stop barking. Maybe the dog learned that a gun shot was a sign to stop barking.
Also the thought crossed my mind, the gun shot could have been someone nearby committing suicide, which I really hope did not happen so near where we live. It was scary to hear the shot so late in the night.

I am not even sure I would recognize a gunshot if I hear one, we do here fireworks quite a lot at night at this time of the year.

@Shavkat I mentioned it to my neighbor and they did not hear it. My neighbor thinks it could have been someone shooting at coyotes. We do have a few of those around.

i'd been dialin' 911 'n let the officers see what 'twas goin'. if'n somebody shot the pup, they need to be dealt with. i hope nobody took theirs nor anyone elses life.
