School Lunch Shaming? I have mixed feelings about this.

Let's see if I understand this. There are some children who are getting a free lunch because their parents are within a certain financial profile. Others are being rejected because their parents did not pay their lunch bill. At that point, the hot lunch is thrown away to teach the child a lesson--there are no free lunches. Some are being asked to sweep the floor to prove that point. Throwing the food away is a waste of money just to teach a child a lesson. When I was in school, We bought lunch tickets. If we did not have the ticket or money to buy one, we did not get lunch, period. I see nothing wrong with a cold cheese sandwich, fruit, vegetables and a carton of milk. Some days, I don't even eat lunch. Most days when I do eat lunch, it is cold. There is nothing wrong with a cold lunch unless it is supposed to be hot to begin with. Read this: The trashed midday meals were usually replaced by two pieces of bread and a cold slice of cheese along with fruit, vegetables and a carton of milk while the child’s friends and classmates looked on. Is it that embarrassing to eat a cold lunch? Are we keeping up with the Jones at an early age? What is wrong is to have the hot lunch they chose trashed in front of them or their friends. That is a waste. Students should have money or a ticket when they get in line so they know they can afford lunch. If they don't have a ticket or money, they know they are not getting a hot meal. Now, if they were willing to give a cold lunch to someone who could not afford it, the child should know ahead of time that they cannot afford it and that they are getting a cold lunch. The system needs to be worked out. Then in Alabama they are stamping their arms. That is degrading. Such stupidity.

All children should have lunch every day. In Colorado they can get free lunches which are the same as the other kids so no one knows.

Yes, all children should have lunch every day. There should be a variety of choices. Putting children to shame is wrong.

The practice of shamming children in front of their peers is bad. It traumatize them. Besides it's not their fault but their parents for neglecting or forgetting their obligation. It's the school authorities who should be shamed for using a throwback to Charles Dickens Victorian teaching methods.

That's stupid. When I was a kid, we brought our lunch from home--and we didn't have "Lunch police" telling us what we could bring !

When I was in the lower grades, we did not have a cafe. We either walked home to get lunch or we brought our own lunch and ate in the music room.

In my old school district the students could charge lunch if they were not on the free lunch program with the expectation the parents would pay it off, eventually. Some kids had outstanding charges of $200 or more. That's a lot of lunches at $2.25 each. Some kids, we learned, were being given the money for lunch, pocketing it to go to the store after school, and charging the lunch. Then the parents blamed the school for letting them charge. But we have no choice. We have to feed them what everyone else is eating if they ask for it. Some school in our district have so many students who qualify for free lunch that they are eligible for a program by which all the students in the school get free lunch. My last school was only 1 or 2% shy of this category last year, but will probably make it this coming year.
