A waste of money, a waste of time, a waste of life.

I wrote about my projects for my vacations in another post and one of my friends said that going to a casino was a waste of money (among other things). I was left thinking... What do I call a waste of time? What do other people call a waste of time? I once talked about this with my eldest daughter who tended to be guilty when she "wasted" time. We reached the conclusion that that waste depended on the values of the society we lived on. The ancient Greeks thought that "otium" was important as it was the time to think and to create. The opposite, "nec otium", the Latin word for business, meant a non creative activity, one that could be done by just anyone. Many of us want retirement to do something creative, to have an activity that will be interesting. What are your plans for this part of your life? Are you interested?

I personally do not gamble BUT I do not think its any of my business to say its wrong for others to gamble. Its their money and their time, if it makes that person happy who am I to say its wrong? Since you are in remission go and have some fun, you as well and I know life can be here one minute and gone the next. Live life to the fullest, no matter how you want to do it.

My husband, who never gambled but loved to watch ME gamble said that we should take to the casino the amount of money we would spend in another amusement. So I took (and take) the amount I´d spend on a show or the amount I´d spend on a dinner out.

I agree. I once told someone that I could do anything I wanted with my money, as long as I didn´t ask them for theirs.

I agree with this view. People have a right to do what they want with their monies. But if they, after wasting that money approach me, I ain't going to help them or theirs you know.

I guess it really does depend on the individual and their own views and values. We all see things differently and what we feel is a "waste of time" may differ from others.

I agree. We are all different and even different from one time of our lives to the other.

When I retire, I want to do a little bit of gardening, and some social work. Social work for people who are downtrodden not socialize. lol

I did gardening for years until I was diagnosed with a lymphoma. I have a pain in the tummy that will never go away. So now, I can help watering the plants or change plants in containers if Leticia places them over a table.

I really have no idea. There is so much on my plate at the moment... maybe just sitting on the porch reading would be bliss!

I´m taking a good book to Aruba. I hope I can finish it. I checked it and I will be able to read it even with no glasses.

I know that gambling won't be part of my retired life, because it would be long money I can't afford to lose. My aunt is addicted to it and i don't want that kind of problem.. A neighbor of mine lost his home over gambling.. I am afraid that part of life will be what is always been to watch my money and just try to enjoy life..go to simple places . I won't judge others, for what they do, but i can understand doing something that you enjoy.

@CookieMonster46 I have enough money to play a bit every time I go on a holiday. I don´t set a foot on a Casino here.

A waste of time just depends on our definition of productivity- for some resting or being online can be a waste of time. For most, it's a method to de stress.

I used to have some big plans for my retirement. Travel, visiting friends, etc. But, instead I have committed to helping my daughter raise her son. And, in beginning that I have realized I couldn't, and wouldn't want to travel by myself any way. So, now I am writing and immersing myself in arthritis, hypothyroidism and obesity. Such fun!

I´m so sorry! Not for helping your daughter. I think that there is a sense of fulfillment when one is needed. Some of those ailments can be stopped if not cured. My cancer is not remission (not cured) so why shouldn´t some of your problems come to a standstill too? I do hope they do.

A waste of time? A waste of time is bothering too much about what others might think of me for example. That is a waste of time. Why can´t you go to a Casino and enjoy yourself? Have a blast Margi and do whatever you want. Let that hair down and live it up. Enjoy the book.

Your words are always helpful, friend! I will not lose my house at the Casino, but I will spend some pennies and maybe some dollars, depending on luck. But I already found some nice sandals and clothes to do to the Casino, casual but elegant (just to enjoy myself).

@marguicha And I ask myself why don´t you do just that go and blow whatever you want and with style? I would do just that if I had the dosh I mean cash. You don´t have to lose your House at the Casino that ´s for the Films. You go in that Casino and dazzle them all go I dare you. PS: Wish I was going too.

Gambling is in my blood but I do not gamble because I know of its consequences. Having said that i do indulge in online casino fun which is there for no money. I have visited a casino at an airport in Washington and tried my luck once and got even. We used to take part in raffles and stuff - which was more for charity. I do not work and have my hands full doing what I enjoy doing
