Comedy, coughing, a bug and a bit of boredom kept me away from myLot

I've been on here very little since early April. There were a number of reasons for this. Firstly, I recently made a return to stand-up comedy and had my first spot for a very long time booked for 10 April. I spent time writing, editing and rehearsing my set for London. Although I didn't progress beyond my heat of the competition, I was delighted with the experience and response. I saw comedians who gig regularly get very little back from.the audience, whereas I got laughs. Afterwards a number of seasoned pros, including the compere, were very complimentary. Since then much of my focus has been on progressing further with this. Later in April I caught a cough which went on for weeks and laid me pretty low. It wasn't flu (I had a flu jab for the first time ever in January) but it made me pretty sluggish and I didn't feel like doing much once work and chores were completed. Then there was a different type of bug, the infuriating 'Aw snap!' that keeps coming up on Chrome and crashing pages, including every time I tried to log in here. It may be easy to fix on many devices but not on the Nook that I use to post here. In the end I installed Firefox. It seems slower and harder to edit but at least it lets me on here. And lastly, although I have never been the most prolific poster here, I must admit that I was getting a bit bored with it (sorry!) But having spent time away means that I come back here refreshed and can cherry-pick from weeks of members' discussions to respond to. (The fact that I was about 80% towards my next payout also helps!) What keeps you away from here? And what has been the biggest event for you over the past couple of months?

@asfarasiknow That is a funny way to put it, but you are supposed to be a comedy writer!

A stand up comic... wow! I'd like to read more posts about your experiences if you don't mind. Life usually keeps me away from myLot. Sometimes, I go on a connection detox and just log off from technology and enjoy life as it should be. Not much happening in my life - a bit boring but that is how i like it.

@asfarasiknow looking forward to your future posts. Connection detox is my small way of being connected with nature and the world around me, unfiltered by technology.

You use a Nook? A What? Life keeps me away from here. Just the humdrum of life.

A Nook is the Barnes and Noble rival to Amazon's Kindle ereader. I have had this for 4 years and the amount of use I have had from it is unbelievable.

I enjoy stand-up comedy. More people are starting to appreciate this comedy genre in the Philippines.I imagine how an audience would react to your performance can cause some anxious moments.

@asfarasiknow _They're not mainstream but they have a following. Humor in the Philippines is more of the Buster Keaton- Charlie Chaplin type of slapstick comedy.

Offline projects keep me away - but not longer than two or three days. Nothing earth shaking has happened for me over the past two months.

That's how it is to most of us. There are days we cannot be here because of our real lives' activities. What is good though, is we can catch up when we come back here. And not being here makes us enthusiastic again to see our friends here.

Comedy is great and do you do it alone or with some one else. I like Jeff Durham he has a lot of neat puppets that he does his shows with.

The boredom, yes, that happens. Well done on the stand-up, may it bring you success.

What keeps me away from here? Eating and pooping. Why did you not advance beyond the first round if they were laughing? What kind of material do you do?

Very self-effacing observations, stuff about my home town, oh, and Churchill, Gandhi and Clyde from 'Every Which Way But Loose' also put in an appearance! Many comedy competitions here are based on audience voting in the early heats so you can bring 10 friends who will vote for you, get no response and still go through to the next stage. I travelled 100 miles on my own. The organisers will also sometimes choose the odd wild card contestant but that didn't happen with me. Nevertheless, I travelled home feeling absolutely elated by the experience.

Doing standup is something I would really like to have as an event! How long was your set? It seems that I have been off a lot too lately, but trying to get back in to things.

It was a competition for older comedians (although the minimum age to enter was remarkably low!). We were allowed a fairly strictly timed 5 minutes. I wrote out the act, did a word count, edited, recorded at home, learned it and rehearsed. On the night I was just a few seconds under the 5 minutes.

I get burned out on it every once in awhile, so I don't stay away, but I scale it back for a couple days.

@asfarasiknow balance, this is my secret, I don't force myself. If I'm inspired, mostly I'm here.
