FACEBOOK REVELATIONS

Since the arrival of Facebook, Twitter and other social sites where members voice their opinions and deepest thoughts freely - can we say for a fact that the world has become a more dangerous?
I really don't know what goes through the minds of some people who post anything they feel like without thinking of the consequences. One such example is the recent arrest of a man who posted a despicable message on facebook.
In the message he said that someone should find the daughter and wife of the Prime Minister of his country - slit their throats and rape them!
Now, is that freedom of speech , or a punishable offense? He was granted bail after spending a night in jail. What are your thoughts?

Punishable, because freedom does not threaten or infringe. Really simple.

I think there are reasonable limits to free speech. I hope the night in jail opened his eyes to the limitations.

Threats like that should be punishable. I think it takes freedom of speech a little too far.

The world hasn't become more dangerous, it is just that we see more than we used to.
Now when it is people that come up with threats, it isn't freedom of speech. a threat is a threat and it is punishable to a degree. Yes it is still considered freedom of speech because many will not be investigated, but it can be punishable if people fear this person to be harmful to society. If they were just calling them names, that is freedom of speech, it is silly, but it doesn't cause any harm.
People have always been like this, people have always had opinions about authority figures, it is just being seen more instead of just saying it to 2 or 3 people.

@Kandae11 People made bombs before the internet. It is just easier to access, but it doesn't change the fact that the world is feral and will always be.

Freedom of speech comes at a cost. You can't fault them for speaking their mind

@Kandae11 yes we can. You can't force someone not to say something. You may not like what they say but that doesn't mean they can't say it

If someone makes threats of murder online, that is crossing the line Kandase.
Today it seems a common theme to do so too often.
I feel that is not freedom of speech but a threat.
And yes punishment should be appropriate. Just my thoughts on it.

The question is what is the sanity level of people who say such things. Do you follow up such comments to determine if they are indeed a threat to society?

I am not a fan of social media sites so I don't frequent them to know first hand what goes on. However I do know from what I have read in the press that , many young girls have been trafficked, murdered and otherwise misled by people they meet on the internet. Back to this young man and his message - he didn't say he would do it, but he is suggesting that someone does it - that is putting ideas in the heads of those with unstable minds.

@Kandae11 I consider social media a poison on society for the reasons you state and then some.

I feel there are posts that should not be put on facebook and should be taken down by the facebook people, but, it takes forever and then there are people that should have the right to write certain things are put in facebook jail. The facebook people pick out who they want and block them so they cannot post for a certain amount of time. The world has always been dangerous. There are horrible people out there that want the world to be a certain way. What he said is not right and it is very sad that made bail. We have in my country those that get a light sentence for murdering my people and the poor families see that and that is not fair to the families of the murdered person.

That is terrifying! You've reminded me of someone who regularly goes on Facebook to air her opinions on many subjects and while she constantly makes a fool of herself, she has no clue. And she has a group of followers who egg her on no matter what she says or thinks.
Yes, we have freedom of speech. But when it can hurt someone else, it needs to stop. Some of these people incite riots.

I am slightly confused about its proper usage if some one use it only to print pictures of their weekend tours that would be a fraction of its usage.
But some times people misuse it by spreading rumors that too is not good

That is terrible, and I am not sure he should not still be in jail right now. That is the problem with freedom. That is the problem with high tech things like the computers. It is used to hurt others. We live in an age where people do not feel they have to be responsible for what they say. When freedom of speech was created, life was different from what it is today. People also say things for attention.
