Asteroids and Earth

Several things lately about asteroids interacting with Earth. A couple of weeks ago I saw a show in PBS about the asteroid that came in over a town in Siberia at a shallow angle and exploded while still at a high altitude. While it did some damaged it was not as bad as it would have been if it had some in at a more direct angle like the one in 1906 that caused a lot of damaged but if I am remembering right was not over any a populated area. Then I saw the title of an article on line about NASA looking into coming up with a rocket or something to knock a threatening asteroid off course. Now starting tonight there is a TV show, Salvation, with the plot of a devastating asteroid that will hit Earth in 186 days. As I see there are only a few solutions to the problem of a major asteroid heading toward Earth. One is deflecting or blowing it up; another is building a lot of bunkers and hope for the survival of as many people as possible and that there is still the ability on live on Earth in time; another is to try to save some of humanity by having spaceship ready to go that can support life for a very long period of time and either try to reach some other planet or return after Earth has recovered.

I always worry about the old spacecraft debris or space stations that are flying around up there. What if that falls to earth. Very dangerous. I've never heard of asteroids falling onto people? They always seem to land in remote locations, at up till now?

There is the possibility of an asteroid so big that no matter where it hit, it would wipe the human race. Remember an asteroid was what wiped out the dinosaurs.

@stealthy So true we have been on borrowed time, haven't we?
