Why I hold my pants up with a shoelace (instead of a belt)

Ok, so I'm not expecting anyone will actually try this but I stopped using belts awhile ago and now I keep my pants on using a shoelace string. It happened quite accidentally, but once it did, I decided that I will never go back to using belts again (unless there is a special occasion and I want to look fancy). What happened is this: I became a bit overweight - about 60 pounds overweight. I had to keep moving down notches on my belt because it wouldn't fit otherwise. The belt finally wore out and broke because I kept trying to force it into a notch that it didn't want to be in, which wore out the leather. I bought a new belt, and was dismayed to find that this new, unbroken-in belt wouldn't even fit on the same notch as my older, stretched out belt, which made me feel even fatter. I decided to get my calories under control (I love to cook so that was a challenge) and began doing a lot more walking and started losing the weight. Eventually I got all the way up to the top notch of the belt from being so much thinner and I decided that I wanted to go a step further and create a new notch, so as to help me not get fat again. It was a frickin hassle trying to poke a hole through that thick leather, but ultimately I did. It made my belly stick out a little having the belt on so tight, but it kept me focused on not getting fat again. Then, some time later, when got even thinner and I wanted to create yet another notch, I had an idea. Why not ditch the belt completely and use a shoelace? That way I can dial in whatever tightness I want and then tie it off with a knot. I didn't thread it all the way around - just through a couple of the loops on either side, and it worked. And that's how it happened. I can tie it as tightly as I want, which might make me "feel fat," but actually helps to keep me thin.

That sounds like a great idea and if it keeps you skinny so much the better.

This is brilliant Randy! What a good idea..I never wear belts as I don't often wear pants that need them. But I will remember this idea. Thanks!!! Really its really great.

Thanks so much for the nice comment! It could especially help anyone who has a belt that suddenly breaks and they need a quick solution. Of course you would need to have a spare shoelace handy. lol

@LimeOtter When I was reading it I thought this guy must be very skinny to fit a shoe lace around his waist but then you explained.

I think it's more comfortable than a belt because it doesn't pinch my sides if I wear it tightly like a belt would. I don't even notice that it's on!

Well that's an issue with a solution right there.

It is understandable though. I know that it is hard to find belt specially if you're quite big. I have a friend who have the same issue and i was the one who advised her to use a lace instead. Then there was one time when we went out and she told me she is using a lace to keep her pants up and it looks fine.
