Why are cherries so expensive?

Canada

I think I kind of know the answer to this, actually. It's because their seasonal. But why does that have to be expensive? It really sucks because I've recently discovered how much I love cherries. I always hated them on ice cream so I assumed I just didn't like them at all, but I just bought some today and they're actually super delicious by themselves. The ones I got on ice cream were always so mushy, it was gross. But these are crunchy and juicy just...so good. But holy smokes, 4 pounds was 8 dollars! 8 dollars! And, I know this because I worked in a grocery store for the past year, a bag like I bought would normally be like 12 to 14 bucks. That's insane! Do you think the price of cherries is worth it? I mean, when they're on sale like they were today, even though I still found it was kinda expensive, I figured they're only seasonal so I better get them while I can. This is in Canada mind you so I'm not sure how expensive they are anywhere else.

I am sure in Asian countries it would be expensive. We don't have fresh cherries in the market. We can avail them in cans or in bottles.

@Rigel401 I agree. We just use them for toppings of some food. I prefer to have fresh tropical fruits in my country.

@Shavkat I am now officially addicted to cherries after buying them again so I guess I'll be eating a lot of them when they're on sale. But tropical fruits will always be my favourite, especially in juices or smoothies.

That doesn't sound as tasty as fresh. Are they mushy in a can or bottle?

Well, picking cherries is labor intensive. It takes a lot of cherries to make up a quart basket.

@Rigel401 Well, they grow on trees, so the pickers have to climb ladders, which adds a chance of injury (by falling). Even when I was a teenager and had a summer job picking strawberries, we got paid more per basket as the season progressed and the berries got smaller (therefore taking longer to fill a basket).

I actually did not think...about that...aw man. Now I just seem like an insensitive cherry hogger. But that does explain it. There's gotta be a better way to pick cherries.

@BarBaraPrz Apples, oranges and bananas are picked on trees too. But cherries are much smaller so that adds on to the difficulty of picking them, I'd assume.

I thought the cherries shall be less expensive in your side because the chrries grow there. Here it is rather expensive as I think they are imported. We seldom will have them as they are very expensive and they can not store for a long time, too.

@Rigel401 I think cherries are grown in North America? The famous story is George Washington cut the cherry tree

@youless Maybe they're grown in the US and not in Canada? I'd have to do more research on this I guess.

I wish they were less expensive. I wasn't sure where they were grown, maybe they're grown in BC? I have no problem with storing them...since I eat them right away anyway.

Haha! Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking when I was buying them today. But still, I had to take the opportunity. I'm certainly not buying them when they're 14 dollars!

@Rigel401 in my country, we have a variety that's commonly grown in mountainous parts of our region, but its not appealing as your cherries there.

@ilocosboy Really? I would think a variety would be more appealing. Maybe if you're trying them for the first time, but if you're used to eating them it probably gets boring.

Oh don't buy cherries but they always taste good on top of a sundae. Wonder why they are so expensive. Now I have to check my grocery store and report back to you

Yeah, it really sucks. It's bad enough that fruit is already expensive enough as it is and then you have the most delicious fruits be the most expensive. Go figure, haha. At least the price of pears aren't that bad and those are my favourites.

They are expensive in my area because they don't grow here. Its the cost of transportation and I chuckled to see $8. I have paid more and its my favorite fruit. My husband said my snack is expensive, but I love them, so its how I have a treat. Sometimes I use the cherries in a pie, but prefer to eat them fresh.

I guess I'm just cheap! Haha. I know that I like them fresh now so I'd definitely like to try them in a pie.

Hi, I believe that nowadays, the price of all fruits is high, not only cherries. Bad weather and other reasons can push prices up because of a small crop and scarcity. On the contrary, however, a high supply of fruits does not necessarily cause prices to drop and come back to “normal”. That’s a mystery! Cherries are highly seasonal and hard to pick (pickers need to be careful not to damage the tree, because this can result in no fruit for the following year). In terms of nutrition, I think that they contain more calories than any other fruit, in addition to other excellent nutritional benefits. and an excellent taste.
