How to describe Brown sauce ?

We all know what ketchup is and describe it, it's simple 'tomato' right. So how would you describe Brown sauce to someone who has never tried it or heard of it before. Is it spicey, tangy, fruity, yes but that describes a whole spectrum of sauces, so just how would you describe it.

It depends on what kind of sauce you are talking about. Brown sauce cold be barbecue sauce.
