Irresponsible Pet Owners

This is one thing that will send me over the edge. My neighbor to the right was talked into taking an 8-week-old puppy. Now mind you, that is too early to take a pup from its mother; let alone take it and leave it alone for 12 hours a day because you're working. First of all the pup is terrified of being taken from its mother and siblings (barely weened) and the 8-12 weeks is when the mother 'teaches' her pups. And she wonders why the pup is cowering under her car shaking like a leaf. My neighbor to the left has had 4 dogs. Two died from Parvo (which was preventable with the shots); another one was never paid attention to and spent more time at my place than theirs. They gave him away. And NOW, they have a 3-month old. Now mind you Jose has asked me to take care of the goat and miniature horse when they go on vacation to Mexico. Now after just getting this pup, they are on vacation for a week and want me to take care of the critters; which is fine. But outside of my time to feed and care for everybody, the pup is still left alone for literally 22 of the 24 hours of the day. That's not right. Not only that but when I went over there to go over what he wanted me to do, I looked over the pup and found 2 ticks on his shoulders and he had a massive ear mite infection (both ears) along with an eye infection. So not only am I taking care of the pup by feeding and playing with him, but I'm also treating him for the illnesses. And he wants to follow me home because I'm the only one that apparently has given him any attention. It bothers me too that since he's not in an enclosure, he could be killed by coyotes. These two situations tick me off royally.

That is so bad. I have dogs like you know. I would never allow my dogs to have ticks or ear mites. I take my dogs to the vet every 3 months for their shots. Here on the islands dogs get heart worm easily because we are in the topics. I need to get them their shots to prevent this. If you want an animal you should have the time to care and love this animals. Furthermore, you should have the money to take care of it and to make sure it gets the shots it needs each year. I have to agree with you on this one. I would be ticked off too if I saw this.

@nanette64 I see that here. People are not responsible when they take a new puppy. Today I took my puppy to the vet for her second set of puppy shots. A dog was in there that had parvo. He was sort of sick and I saw this. I kept my little puppy in her sack and away from this dog. I don't want my dog sick. They ended up keeping the dog at the vets because he was that sick. If they had started the shots when they first got the dog it would of been better for the dog. Plus here once a dog is no longer a puppy most people just throw the dog away and take another puppy. I could never do this to my animals. I invest too much time in them and it would make me sad to just throw them away. I would miss them so much. My animals are like my babies. I love them and worry about them when they are feeling down.

You have two choices - report them or ignore it and I don't think you can ignore it.

@nanette64 We have no animal control at all. If someone dumps a dog on our property we have to find a home for it. We have no one to report animal abuse to. At least you have options.

@AbbyGreenhill Thankfully yeah. When Jose gets back from Mexico, we're gonna have one very serious talk.

What's bad in this itty-bitty town of 3,000 people, you would be amazed at the stray and cruelty problem @AbbyGreenhill . We have only 2 Animal Control guys who have to handle everything and that includes the starved horses, donkeys, cattle, goats, cats, dogs; you name it. It's pathetic. I've had to turn in several people just on my 1-mile road.

What is wrong with people? Why get a pet if you can't be responsible enough to care for them in the proper way. I am so glad that you are there for the puppy and other animals.

@nanette64 Good for you, Nanette. I do the same and if they don't like it well I will send them to you and you can finish them off. Sorry, couldn't resist that.

I would be so tempted to take the puppy and give it away before they come back. Make it look like the coyotes got it. Put fear in them that they too scared to risk losing money on another pet.

Why have they even taken this pup when they can't even look after it. I feel so sorry for those animals . Some people can be so careless and their pets suffer because of them

In my country they just approved a law about pets that mean that if pet owners don´t obey then, they can be fined and even taken to jail (though I don´t think that that will be endorsed)

Most of the time here, the abusers are given a slap on the wrist @marguicha . Once in a while a fine depending on how bad it is.

I'm sure even if I show them how to treat the ear mites and eye infection they won't bother @Hate2Iron .

Only thing I can say it that those kind of people should not even have any pets. That is terrible. Poor puppy at least I hope you can help him.

That's horrible to hear. That poor pup is off to a miserable start to his life, and I'm afraid it will probably only get worse. But thank you for the little bit of care and love you are showing that pup right now!

I have a feeling that as he gets older, he will be at my place more than at theirs @moffittjc . Either that or he'll just run off and be another stray. It makes me so mad.

You are nice to take care of that pup. The owner should know that it should not be weaned at that very early stage! She/he is not a good pet owner!

That is irresponsible but I've akways been told eight weeks is when a puppy can be separated from its mom

In some cases depending on the breed, the puppy is barely weened @thislittlepennyearns . It's the 4 weeks following that are critical to a puppy's behavior and learning ability. The mother is the teacher. It would be like a human at 2-years old taken away from it's siblings and parents. It doesn't understand.
