Do people deserve second chances?

In life, people tend to make mistakes, sometimes getting them into a lot of trouble. Most of the time people who receive a second chance turn their life around for the better, while others tend to fall back into old habits. It's the fear of following back into old habits, which sometimes makes others unwilling to give someone a second chance. They think if the person screwed up once before, they'll do it again. However, there are a few people who are willing to give a person a second chance because deep down they believe in them. With me, I have a good, compassionate heart, so I would be willing to give someone a second chance. Yet, I wouldn't go easy on this person. The person would have to work hard in order to regain my trust and faith, and prove that they really did deserve the second chance. Do you think people deserve second chances? Would you be willing to give someone a second chance if they let you down?

Depends on what they do / did.

@TheInvisibleMan That's true. If they did something really bad, then they don't deserve a second chance.

It depends on the degree and what their offense is.

@JohnRoberts That's true! The offense they committed plays a huge part in whether they deserve another chance.

depend on how serious and avoidable the mistake was - if they did it on purpose they are not getting more chances

@dramagirl26 I see that a lot - people who like to get in a mess because they like the sympathy

@arthurchappell A lot of people tend to do stupid stuff on purpose.

@arthurchappell So true. When they get into trouble, they say they're sorry and didn't mean for it to happen, yet they should've known better than to do it.

Some people deserve a second chance, others will never change and it's wasted time to give them another chance.

@dramagirl26 I agree and usually you can judge by their attitude if they deserve a second chance.

@LadyDuck A person really needs to put the hard work into changing if they want a second chance.

If the mistake was not too awful and it only happened once, I would be willing to give a second chance @dramagirl26 . Should it happen again, then no more chances.

@dramagirl26 Yes, because then they don't really want to change.

@bluesa I agree. If the person continues to make the same mistake over and over again, then their second chance is over.

I think the fair thing to do would be to give people a second chance. Then, if they've learned their lesson from the first mistake, they won't make the same mistake twice. But, if they fall back into their old habits again, you can at least say you've given them a chance, but they failed to live up to their responsibility. You can then move on, knowing you tried. Unfortunately, we can't always change everybody's behavior. But I rest easy at night knowing I tried at least once to give them the benefit of the doubt.

@moffittjc Those are good words. I definitely think people deserve second chances in order to prove themselves, sometimes people change other times they don't.

@dramagirl26 We can't force people to change. That it is up to them. But we can help guide them, and steer them in the right direction. Sometimes that means discipline. I try to use other means first to help someone, but sometimes they need tough love.

It really depends on the gravity of the situation but generally I would give people a second or even a third chance to redeem himself/herself. To a fault, I give people more chances than they deserve.

@allen0187 I'm the same way. I guess it's because I've got a compassionate heart.

I believe that everyone deserves a second chance and for those who don't think they do, I wonder if they count how many chances they have had in life. Of course if someone commit a crime as long as they paid their dues they too deserve a second chance.

@Freelanzer Very well spoken. I think in some point in life we've all gotten another chance to redeem ourselves.

No one is perfect. We all tend to make mistakes. I would give a person a second chance.

Not everyone does. All depends on what they do, imo.

I do believe in second chances. We are humans and none of us are perfect. We tend to hurt other people whether meaning it or not. Trust, though, is another matter because once it's broken, i will never go back to it's original form.

What they did and the circumstances are big factors here, but also attitude, are they genuinely remorseful or not? Not much point giving a second chance to those that won't honour or respect it.
