A lioness in the French countryside.

If you ask me where is Laval, I will tell you that it is somewhere in North-Western France, that I have never been there, do not know how to go there, and never heard of anybody going there. The only people that might be interested by a visit are probably ethnologists studying witchcraft, because there are still some witches in this area, less famous than the witches of Berry, but powerful if I remember what I heard on a cultural radio channel. Looking on Wikipedia for famous people born in Laval, I find two, Henri Rousseau, nicknamed «Le Douanier» (the custom officer), a naive painter ridiculed during all his life and recognized as a self-taught genius after his death, and Alfred Jarry, one of the best French humorists of the beginning of the 20th C, although I am not sure that I should count Jarry among famous people from Laval, because his parents moved when he was young and he never studied there... It seems difficult to believe, but there is something else famous in this area since a few days. Described first by a truck driver like «a lion without a mane», the animal has been reported by 4 other people to the police, in an area of 30 km around Laval. The préfet, who is a fresh new préfet named «Veau», Calf (I don’t know what this calf, who was at the head of the anti-terrorist police not long ago, did wrong to be sent to Mayotte and then to Laval, but these places are not enviable for a préfet), sent 15 gendarmes and police officers to find this bald lion, but they found nothing. He then sent his cabinet director to tell to the media that the news had to be taken carefully, as nobody took a picture or a video, and they did not found any carcass of sheep or other calf in the nature. In a zoo a lion eats 2/3 kg of meat/day, and a lion alone would more probably attack a hen or a rabbit than a cow, except if it wanted to annoy the préfet. Some journalists are already speaking of a mass hallucination, but a lion is not a unicorn, a dragon, or another mythic animal that might have survived in a remote countryside like this one, and there has been a precedent about 20 years ago, when a puma was seen by several people inside a 6000 acres state forest in Chizé, at about 100 km South of Laval. At this time, the préfet sent 100 gendarmes, they found nothing, but as people were still seeing the beast, pedestrian walks in these woods have been forbidden during several years. Maybe Laval will become soon a famous destination for a photographic safari. Photo is mine.

People here and specially in the South part of Spain have been known to have pumas, lions, and lionesses in their property. One was in Madrid and he took the animal out for a walk at about two in the morning and in the very lift people used every day. Can you imagine? I wonder he did not have a camel to go with it as well. Could be an escaped pet as it happens here also on and off.

He has probably not met many people at 2 am. I suppose that this animal escaped from a house, but as it is forbidden to have a lion or a puma in a private property since many years in France, nobody will tell it, to not get a big fee for that. I do not remember when it has been forbidden, I remember that many movie stars had baby beasts at home in the 1980's, it was a kind of fashion.

@topffer There is still the odd one going around that has a pet that they should not have. How on earth do you walk a lion or a lioness through the streets at that time of the morning without anyone seeing them?

@lovinangelsinstead21 At 2 am walking a lion might prevent an assault. I remember that somebody told me that his cat was at home when his house was burgled. The burglar tried to pet the cat, the cat jumped at his face and hurt him so badly that he went to the hospital where they convinced him... to lodge a complaint against the cat's owner. He went to the police and they arrested him.

We have an quasi-mythical beast in an area south-east of us. No-one has been able to get a photo or video of the animal but many say they have heard its screams at night.

Somebody took a photo of this one, and it is a puma. I have not read recent news about it, but I read a few days ago that in another place several policemen and firemen went out to find a black panther, and finally it was identified... as a big black cat.

@topffer Some feral cats can get very big indeed. Some think the one south of us is a puma - maybe escaped from a circus or whatever. They say its cry is unearthly. All the local dogs cower in their beds when it is roaming about.

@JudyEv I have never heard a puma, and I prefer to not hear one. We have had a puma in a public forest, and it has never been caught or killed, despite of several attempts. The forest has been forbidden to the pedestrians during several years in the 1990's.

I had not checked recently, I just did it, and somebody took a photo : it is not a lion, but a puma. It has not been caught yet.

It is a small tag that I saw at the bottom of a wall, not a lot higher than a real mouse.

Very engaging tour/travel post. I picture a medieval neighborhood that has an enchanting gothic ambience and dark ages history of nobility, absolute monarchy, and the rise of French author La Rochefoucauld (I've been just reading and studying about him). My husband photographer would love to visit there and take photos-- for a 50th Anniversary. I hope the French government would still be keeping Laval safe and secure for tourists.

To visit Laval or La Rochefoucauld ? The castle of La Rochefoucauld is a nice Renaissance castle with a large stair designed by de Vinci. It is still owned by the family but can be visited, and the visit is worth the price of the entrance ticket. Somebody took a photo and it is a puma. If it continues to stay near the city, it will be probably caught or killed soon or later.

Is it? I'd like to take a look and screenshot the virtual La Rochefoucuald's castle... from the Internet! :D

Cool, now I have to keep checking up for this lioness from the news . What do you think? Could it be just a hoax? or a result of some modern witchcraft?

I do not think it is a hoax, but it can be another animal than a lion, like a puma or even a very big cat.

@topffer Can you update us on this? (It may turn out to be an unsolved mystery like the Loch Ness Monster. Enough to turn Laval into a great tourist attraction resort ?)

My thought was perhaps this lioness as described is a puma. It happens a lot here. Authorities say, "They do not live in Kansas", wildlife specialists say "they do not live in Kansas". Kids, and other people who live in rural locations say "I saw one. I saw a foot print here. There was a tuft of hair there." My husband and I say "Animals cannot read maps, they do not know when they come to Kansas, and that they are not supposed to be here.". Same with both your puma and your lioness.

Yes, they do not know how to read a map, and they do not swim across the pond. It is forbidden to have a wild animal like a lion or a puma at home in France, but it happens, and this one might have escaped or might have been released by its owner. The puma of Chizé has been seen during 5 years and never caught, but it had settled in a deep forest. This one is in an area with a lot of people living around and will probably be caught or killed when the hunting season will open.
