My Daughter Wrote a Book of Poetry!

From the time she was a young teenager, one of our daughters loved to write poetry. She even won a couple of poetry contests and one of her poems was printed in a national publication. Over the years, however, she grew up, got her Master's Degree, and became a mother and teacher. Her life is full of a number of activities. As a result, I was surprised when she told me she had found her notebook of the poems she wrote as a teenager and published them on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. The book's name is "Summer's End" and you can find it on Amazon by searching Summers End Collection L.C. Thompson The poems are a journey of self-discovery, as she grew from her early teens into a young woman. They deal with far ranging topics which preoccupy most teens ... young love, death, disappointment, pain and more. I'm so proud she has chosen to share her poems with the world. On a number of occasions, I have encouraged @jaboUK and some of the other writers on MyLot to publish their poetry, too. Perhaps this book will spur them all to give it a try!

@DeborahDiane You're sweet. My chapbook is called Sunset Reflections. My daughter added her illustrations so you get a double bargain if you buy it.

That's wonderful. Good for your daughter. Does she still write poetry now?

@JudyEv - She mostly wrote poetry while she was a teenager. However, this may inspire her to start writing again! By the way, a friend of mine has been on a cruise and she is currently in Australia. She messaged me that she went to the Sydney zoo and had her picture taken with a koala bear. I can't wait to see it. You have probably seen a picture of my friend. I sometimes post pictures of her and me walking in Laguna Beach.

@JudyEv - Yes, when they took this trip, they knew it would be winter in Australia, but they got a really good deal on this trip (less than $2,000 a person for a month-long cruise which included Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia). Today is their last day and they have really enjoyed the trip.

That's wonderful. Congratulations to your daughter. I would like to publish my poetry. I've had several published in books and magazines. But it's so much work and I don't have the slightest idea how to go about it.

@RubyHawk - If you can use the computer and the internet, it is very easy to print your poetry in a book on Amazon. You set up your Word document, put a page break at the end of each poem, and go to CreateSpace.com to download the book to their site. They also have formats you can fill-in to create your cover. It is easy and completely free! Best of all, you can make a little money if you sell your books.

@RubyHawk - She has about 30 poems in her book. They are on a variety of subjects. I think the books need to be at least 30 or 32 pages long. It is your book, so you can organize it anyway you want. No one will censor your book or tell you to write it differently. CreateSpace is great! Just take your time, read the instructions and you should have no trouble. You don't have to do the whole thing in one day. You can start it and then go back another day if your run into a problem or you are not sure what to do.

@DeborahDiane Thank you. I should be able to do that. How many poems does your daughter have in her book? And must they be on the same subject? Mine are about everything. I really appreciate your help.

This is wonderful! I had one poem published and I received a hardback book with it in it. I gave it to my son and over the years it got lost. I hope her writing will inspire others.

@DeborahDiane We have a fair few books written by myself and my Mum that will probably be just family heirlooms. It is a nice way of preserving things. My mum made my first book in an exercise book when I was a little girl of 8 and we still have it.

@Jackalyn - Having them printed by a professional, like CreateSpace, is a nice way to preserve them ... and it is free. You just pay for however many books you want yourself. Occasionally, someone else may even buy one. It is pretty cool!

@Jackalyn - I just downloaded a copy of it on my Kindle and ordered five copies of the paperback version. I think our family should have several copies for the future!

@jaboUK - I will let you know if she sells very many books. That may inspire you to put your limericks in a book, too, so the whole world (or at least your descendants), can enjoy your creations!
