What is the safest container made of?

I have taken to cooking as I am living away from my family. Since I like cooking, I should have such containers to keep sugar, salt, coffee and things like that. A friend of mine said that if I wanted to keep sugar, coffee, milk etc, the containers should not be made of plastic. Glass is preferred. What's your take on this?

we tend to use clear plastic so we can see at once what's inside and how much/how little, and also to avoid breakage. we wash it before refilling.

What abouy clear glass? Whats the drawback of using glass containers?

@yanzalong i know glass is good, but it's not really practical in our situation here.

I would say glass because it does not break down chemically nor leave powder residues whem it gets scratched.
