Would you give away something that was special to you?

I replied to a discussion with @OneOMany about giving someone a rock. It is a very good discussion and it brought back a memory when I gave my oldest grandson a rock. This made me start thinking about giving away things. I figure that I can't take it with me and if someone really wanted something it sure wouldn't hurt me to give it to them. My heirlooms I would not give away as they will go to family members. But a picture, knick knack, things like that aren't really that big of a deal. How do you feel about this? I know we all have things that we do want to keep and that is understandable.

I keep all what I judge is important for me, no matter what it is. All this will go to charities once I am gone.

That is a good way to do it. I have been taking a lot to the little thrift shop in town. There are a lot of homeless people around here so I plan to put a notice up for people to pick up some free things.

@LadyDuck That is good to hear about your homeless being taken care of. I think it is great what you do to help them out too.

@velvet53 There are no homeless in Switzerland, not in the area where I live, the charities take care of those in need. When I do not need something, I call the charities and they come to take the objects.

I definitely don't mind giving away things to charity. Of course, there are heirlooms that I'd want my family to keep.

I understand. I don't have a lot left but if some of it will make a person happy then that makes me happy.

I guess you wanted to say, would you give away any special material things. Though you can give away things, you cannot give away your family such as wife, children and relatives you love dearly. Your children can get married but you are not giving them away, you are only expanding your family only, because you would still keep in touch with them.

There is no way I would give away my family but I have been known to ask people if they want a grown son. It is all in fun and I do get some cool replies. I am talking about material things.

It is just stuff after all. I remember when my grandmother was getting older. She started giving me those things she knew I enjoyed of hers. I may do the same thing when I feel my days or more numbered. I think we give things for a reason. I got a beautiful amethyst bracelet from a co-worker one time just because she had appreciated something I had done for her. All different reasons for giving things we have to others.

@celticeagle We sure can. My plants are living proof. I sell some then the next thing I know someone is giving me clippings or potted plants. But they are a little income for me. The only problem is that I can only keep so many plants here during the winter.

You are right about this. There are some things that I want to keep for awhile longer. I just don't need all of this stuff.

Sometimes our focus shifts from things that we have to have to things that are just stuff. When down-sizing I have certainly donated and given things to family members and charitable organizations.

@velvet53 I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but I try not to keep too much useless stuff in our home. The less cluttered feeling is much nicer in our opinion.

I have a very expensive and old leather bomber jacket that was my dad's that he handed down to me when I turned 16. I love that jacket, and wear it all the time in winter (well...what passes for winter in Florida). My son, who is 14 now, has been asking when I will hand the jacket down to him. I told him that when he grows into it, I will pass it on to him. Thankfully, he still has a lot of growing to do before he fits into that jacket. Truth be known, I don't want to give up that jacket. I want to keep it all the way to the day I die, but I know I can't be selfish like that. Besides, I promised my son I would give it to him once he can fit into it. I will probably cry when I finally hand over that jacket someday! haha {I also think I will borrow it from my son quite a bit! lol}

That is a keeper. Hopefully he won't grow too fast. I am sure that he would let you borrow it any time.

@velvet53 He's a little guy, so unless he goes on a major growth spurt soon, it should be a few more years before he even gets close to being able to fit in that leather jacket. So, I figure I have at least 2-3 more years of enjoying that jacket!

We donate things we no longer want, need, or use to our favorite charity thrift shop or Goodwill. Of course, the rest will eventually go to our children. They can do with it as they please.

That is nice of you. I try to find place that gives clothing and stuff to the needy at no charge. I was at the laundromat one day and got to talking to this lady. I had seen her and her son around a lot and knew some about them. She kept admiring this tye dye t-shirt that I had. I laughed at first and told her that I had had it for years and it was wearing out. We talked for awhile and she mentioned it again. I gave it to her. I have seen her many times since and she seems to always have it on. That made me feel good.

I am also thinking of that! But the most valuable things,I 'll give it to my son and to his girlfriend/future wife. I can also give away other small things to other people so they can still use it.

I understand. I didn't feel this way until lately. I keep asking myself, do I need this stuff. Clothing or kitchen items I would gladly give away to people that needs them. The same with towels and blankets.
