Metal Detectors: Are they worth the investment??

United States

Lately, I've been thinking about investing in a metal detector. I love being outdoors and I love finding things. My daughter loves to dig in the dirt so I was thinking about getting a metal detector. That way me and her could go and have outings where we are out walking around and if we happen to find something, its a bonus. What does everyone else think?

It sounds like a good hobby. You have the "digger" already, all you need now is a metal detector. I don't know if it's worth it financially, but it can be fun and "didactic". And I don't even know about the laws there, where you're allowed to dig et cetera.

I use them professionally times to times. Check your local laws to see where you can use them : in my country we need the authorization of the land owner and of the state to make use of a metal detector on an archeological site.

Do get a used one so it is cheaper. I do think it is a wonderful idea and imagine at the adventures you and your daughter can have.

Thank you. I am leaning towards a used one because they are only like $50-100.

If it interests you why not? I wouldn't understand why you would want it since I have different hobbies and I couldn't care less about that.

Nothing yet lol still looking into getting a metal detector. We love going fishing at different places and I thought that since my daughter isnt that interested in fishing all the time, she could use the metal detector to see if she can find anything lol

I don't know why you need backup from anyone. Go ahead if you think you'd like the hobby.

I think it will be a great idea but you don't have to invest a lot of money to it. I think a better toy metal detector can work, too. As you are not planning to dig a treasure. It will be enough to have the toy metal detector and both of you will have fun with it.

I would go for it! Not sure what part of the states you are in, but ghost towns and beaches are full of "lost" stuff! I would love to do it here, but it would probably be construed as work...bye bye Visa!
