Do You Use Artificial Sweeteners?

I saw something on a TV show this week about artificial sweeteners that convinced me to NEVER use them. I never have used them in the past and NOW I definitely won’t use them. The report said that artificial sweeteners, can increase the PH level and slow down digestion. They kill good bacteria in the intestines by as much as 50% and actually promote weight gain. Sweeteners can be hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic, both of which can lead to liver and kidney lesions. Sweeteners can remain in your system, up to 5 days after consumption and can lead to kidney damage. What do you think?

For years I've been hearing that about artificial sweeteners. And sugar isn't good for you either, so they say. I use a product called xylitol. It looks and tastes like sugar and is a natural product from trees and corncobs. I tried stevia but couldn't stand the taste of it and the measurements are much different than sugar, whereas xylitol is the same - 1 teaspoon of xylitol = 1 teaspoon sugar. It has about a third the calories as sugar and is safe for diabetics.

@IreneVincent Some toothpastes have xylitol in them. It's supposed to help prevent cavities I think. It's also in some brands of gum. There are a few conflicting reports on it, particularly if used in large amounts. I use it very minimally as I don't eat/drink much that I need to sweeten. I've been using it for about 10 years. Also, several negative reports were funded buy sugar growers and marketers associations so they most likely had biased reporting of results. It's very bad for cats and dogs. Here's a couple of links, but I'm sure you want to do your own research as well: http://www.healthline.com/nutrition/xylitol-101#section8
Xylitol is a 100% natural sweetener from fruits & vegetables. It has 1/3 the calories of table sugar, amazing dental benefits, & tastes... just like sugar!

I've heard of xylitol but never used it. I need to do some research on it, I guess. Although, I plan to continue NOT using artificial sweeteners. I am not convinced that any of them are healthy choices.

In the past I used Splenda for a year , then was advised to stop and I did. Now I am thinking of Stevia which is supposed to be a natural sweetner.

Splenda was one of the sweeteners that was mentioned in the report. It's good that you stopped using it. I don't know much about Stevia, but I know that it's derived supposedly from a plant. I would do some more research on it if I were you. Sugar, used sparingly would be a better choice, in my humble opinion.

@IreneVincent That is what I was told by a health expert who saw me adding splenda to my coffee at a function.

I always try to avoid artificial sweeteners, I drink my coffee or tea bitter. However, I sometimes drink diet coke.

An occasional diet coke might be tolerable, but it's one of the worst things you can drink, so be careful.

I have never used them, but slowly reduced my sugar intake. I am now down to no sugar in my coffee.

I use very little sugar. But, I do like some cream and sugar in my coffee. Although I don't drink coffee every day, especially in the summer.

I have used saccharine for over 40 years and recently tried to switch to sugar as I was concerned that it not being naturally occurring it might be having an unwanted effect on my body.

I used to use artificial sweeteners but no more. I never realized how bad they were until recently

Yes, MOST people do not realize how bad sweeteners really are. It's good that you stopped using them.

Never... I only use natural. Washed or brown sugar is my preferred sweetener... Sometimes honey...
