That Crippling Phobia

I have Acrophobia, or more commonly known as fear of heights. I tried many times to remove it by riding roller coasters and others that would make me force down my fear but it went nowhere. I actually feel like it only got worse. There was a time I can't handle going up alone in the third floor of a building using the escalator after those flodding sessions I did to myself. I really hate having this because I am a very adventurous person who wants to experience everything and make the most out of my life but I can't because of this. I want to experiece sky diving among other things, but I'm afraid I might freeze up or worse, have a stroke, while up in the air. Do you have any phobias? How do you handle it?

The one thing I'm afraid of is driving. I have been scared of driving since I was a child, I'm not sure why but my grandmother is the same way.

@JeeyanDee I think it is genetic because my older sister also has a fear of driving.

@LovingMyBabies I bet your children will have too. Hahaha. So does this mean you don't drive? How do you go about your place then?

i have read that phobias could develop when they see same fear from their family members. Maybe you got it from your grandma? Phobias could be caused by genetics too.

I'm not sure what you call the fear of ghosts. I fear nothing but ghosts. I see myself as a courageous person.

@ramapo17 What you can't see can create the most terrifying images in your mind. That's what makes it really scary because I couldn't fight back. But everything I can see, touch, and smell, I am never afraid of, coz I know that that I can do something about that. However, it was before I became stronger and have a great spiritual, emotional, and mental strength. So I'm no longer afraid of ghosts as I know I can defeat them by a mere prayer.

How can you be afraid of a ghost as you can't see them. I can say the only fear I have is of the dentist. When I was growing up they did not have all the equipment they do now and we never had anything for the pain back then. I still go of course but I am a wreck until I am out of there.

I also suffer badly from fear of heights. I don't fight it. I accept it. I try to avoid heights whenever possible. I also can't stand being in crowds and in closed spaces.

@JeeyanDee Nothing caused it. Such phobias aren't caused by anything. They develop over the years.

@MALUSE I hate to say this but you're wrong. Phobias just don't come out of nowhere. There is a reason for it such as our experiences in the past. NHS proves this by saying phobia can develop during childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. They're often linked to a frightening event or stressful situation. It could also be caused by genetics, such as agoraphobia and social phobias, where chemistry in the brain is usually linked. Though yes, other phobias occur for unknown reasons, but that doesn't mean that they just develop out of nothing.

I knew I fear heights but I never knew it was called acrophobia. I don't really try to overcome it... all I do is to avoid heights
