Do you use a dishwasher? Do you think dishwashers are a bit silly?

My current humble abode may be the only one I've lived in that has a dishwasher. Nah, that's not quite true. The house I lived in in Seattle for a year had one. I always chuckle a bit when I load my dishes into the dishwasher here. I pretty much wash them before I even load them. Force of habit, you know. Do you have a dishwasher? Or do you wash your dishes by hand (or both)? Have you ever found dishwashers silly? Or are they a necessity in your life?

We don't have a dishwasher. The kitchen would be cramped if we put one in. We wash dishes by hand. I hate washing dishes. But we're only two people, so it's doable. Do you use your child clients as slave labourers in your kitchen?

Yes, I do. They make good workers. Until a certain age, anyway.

I usually swap with my partner when we wash dishes so that we don't always do the same task in a row. But I can't imagine having to wash dishes for an entire family... my mother never let me near the kitchen because she thought I'd break something, so I only learned how to when I was already living on my own!

Yes, my hands are my dishwashers. They don't require electricity.

Dries out the hands so fast if you wash a lot, though! My palms are crying... (or maybe I need to get a gentler dish soap.)

My daughter uses the dishwasher. She has a lot to do so this is good for her. I always did most by hand. I think that the dishwasher is a great thing when there is sickness in the house.

True. And there's always been one at the "institutions" I've worked at. The water is really hot, and sterilizes things.

I think I can wash dishes faster by hand than using the dishwasher.

It's 100 degrees out today, and I was reminded this morning that dishwashers kind of heat up the house as well.

I have had a dishwasher in the past. Currently my kitchen does not have one. I can manage quite well without. What I do have difficulty with is my apartment size stove. It is the most inconvenient thing in my kitchen.

@TheHorse my husband said it can't be fixed and offered to get me a new one. I use it for storage. I'll probably give in one day.

I dislike dishwashers. Our 'new' house already has one but although we've lived in it for a year we have used it three times so far. I could give you a whole list of why I dislike it - and anyway I quite enjoy washing dishes unless there are a really huge number of them.

@TheHorse We should swap chores - I really hate vacuuming! Although we have what is supposed to be a really good vacuum cleaner it wilfully ignores every bit of fluff and instead sucks up everything it is not meant to. It makes me so angry! And I'm convinced it is out to get me, I believe it already fractured my toe once when I was trying to vacuum my car!

I try to be "zen" about rinsing/washing dishes, but I can't quite "get into it" as much as vacuuming. Ahh, vacuuming.

I have been without one at times, but always used it when I had one around. We eat well and end up with a lot of dirty dishes, pots and pans, etc, so the old dw gets a lot of use.

I was raised without one and have only had 1 as an adult and that one was only used to sterilize canning jars for when I made my own salsa's and jams @TheHorse . I see no point in washing dishes only to put them in a dishwasher.

Yep, we're kind of on the same page there. By the time I'm done "rinsing," I've washed the plate or bowl!

I have a dishwasher and I absolutely LOVE it. There are only 2 of us but I cook everything from scratch so I make a ton of dishes, pots, pans, etc. I can easily run 2 loads a day. I HATE hand washing dishes.

We don't have a dishwasher in our home--it's not really a popular thing where I live, I think! It's a very American thing. It also perplexes me... how do you make sure you've gotten every bit of food and smear of sauce cleaned?! I don't even use kitchen gloves (it's not a popular thing here either) because I can't feel the plate if I missed some dirt...

I'm the same way! I like to get every little bit of gravy (or whatever) out of those little edges and corners. By the time I'm done, I don't really need the dishwasher.

@QuantumJoy Non-stick spray isn't really a popular thing here either, as far as I know! But I might be able to look into other stuff I could soak the dishes in, maybe...

I think "dish pan hands" is an invention of those who make products to combat it. But I could be wrong.

@TheHorse - I have always had a dishwasher and pre-washed the dishes before using it. You are right. It is silly. My sister, who has owned several restaurants, showed me what she does and it is very easy. She pours a small amount of bleach into a dishpan with some soapy water. She lets it sit all day. She washes her dishes in the water all day, as they get dirty, then rinses them in warm tap water and puts them in a drainer or dries them. The bleach disinfects them, so she doesn't even worry about hot water. It is just as quick as pre-washing the dishes, and they are clean and disinfected. That's what I do, now. It's so quick and easy!

I am one that has never had one in my house, well I did in a couple houses I stayed in, rented, between buying but I never use them. Most of the time I can hand wash them faster than rinse, load.... well ya know. Plus I do not have to many because I wash dishes as I cook. And if I am feeling really lazy I will use paper plates, for a sandwich just a napkin. I am training to get off the power grid and on to solar power so I try to cut use of appliances that are not necessary.
