August Happenings Down Under

Wellington on a wild, wet, windy night.

It seems a while since I've been here. Part of the reason is I spent a lot of time with my brother, who has been a paraplegic for 56 years and in a lot of pain over the last few months. He finally passed away Sunday and the funeral was yesterday. I will miss him, but he has been freed from the confinement of his wheelchair after all those years. Spring has arrived with a flourish here in New Zealand. Daffodils brighten the day everywhere and blossoms are starting to appear. I saw my first ducklings of the season while out walking this morning. That certainly brought a smile to my face. Silly mother duck was escorting her ducklings down a very busy road during morning rush hour traffic, away from both the river and nearby lake in the park. I do hope they all survive okay and eventually find their way to a safe place. I've spent a bit of time in Wellington researching for my latest book over the last few weeks. The view above is that city at night taken from my hotel room. It was a wild, wet, windy night, something Wellington can be quite famous for. I loved the wildness of it as it buffeted the building. Other August events include preparations for the writers festival coming up in a couple of weeks time plus, of course, writing.

We should move from hemisphere to hemisphere to enjoy our favourite season(s) all year round! So you have finished your book on the local swimming hall and club. What will your new book be about?

Ye, that book was launched in April. The next one is of the local old pre 1950 postcards of this region.

@valmnz It must have been a proud moment for you when the book was launched! Have you got many old postcards yourself or are you asking people to send you theirs?

@MALUSE I have over 300, plus I know two other serious collectors and the local archives have a good collection too.

Condolence to your family; though you said it freed your brother from confinement in a wheelchair which made his passing acceptable to your family.

56 yrs is a long time but as you say he has been finally released it's strange that the duck and her brood was going in the wrong direction. i hope the weather cleared up in the morning.

I am sorry for your loss. It is wonderful you were able to spend the time with your brother. I too like storms when I am safe and warm inside. Why do those ducks and geese always have to take those babies across busy roads? What is wrong with the pond they are in?!

Yes, this view is out across the CBD and harbour. I slept with the curtains open.
