In my opinion, I think China would retaliate against us if we just one day attacked north korea without any reason other than threats. I think If north korea attacked us first, China might not do anything? Not too sure though.. good question. I feel a scary future is coming.. hopefully I'm wrong.

Scary it is and like you, I hope I'm wrong but for sure a preemptive attack on North Korea on whatsoever ground would see China choose to stand with its neighbour, which brings in the question of Russia and its desire to be a super power and my guess is it would join China and NK. So the only way the US would have both China and Russia on its side is if Kim struck 1st...whichever way, that would be the beginning of the 3rd world war.

@Mr_Anomaly China doesn't want the US to win the war, of course.
The best scenario would be a neutral China, but yeah, that's unlikely.
Get into a bunker or move to Europe or Africa before it's too late. 
I really hope Europe will remain neutral, at least. We're going to get the radiations anyway.

@JKamos I really do hope NK, Russia, and China are aware that a 3rd world war would likely end humanity. Enough nuclear warheads go off, and our planet would be desolate, poisoned and uninhabitable.

The "rare ores conspiracy" sounds reasonable.
China currently sells ores to the US. The ores are required to produce electronic devices.
North Korea has tons of ores too, but it seems like they don't have the technology to extract them.
The US won't extract their own because the process is hazardous to health.
If they got control over NK, they would be able to extract their resources, become independent and stop buying from China. China wouldn't be happy.
For this theory, China will be against the US.
Russia is a North Korean ally and doesn't seem friendly towards the States.

@JKamos The US should keep on buying from China and promise to never attack North Korea.
I think Kim Jong Un feels threatened, and that's why he acts like a loony. 
North Korea could prosper and become a "healthy communist nation" with the right technology, but everybody's greedy.

@sabtraversa I think the only way the US can deal with NK is helping its nationals access information to cause an uprising within...but that will never happen in the near coming future with allies like China on the dictator's side, who would stand to lose a lot like you said.
