Thought it might be interesting to make a baseball player list of diamond stars who continued to play their sport at 40. Here are three of my favorites. Who might you like to make a case for to add to this list? 1. Nolan Ryan- you can't mention his name without talking about strikeouts and no-hitters. Over a 27 year career he amassed 5,714 strikeouts and 7 no-hitters both records. He played in games over 4 decades from 1966-1993, one of only 29 players to do so. Opposing batters hit only .204 lifetime against Ryan. The hurler also is ranked first in fewest hits per 9 innings with 6.56. 2. Pete Rose- Charlie Hustle is the all-time MLB leader in hits with 4,256. He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and also made 17 All-Star appearances at five different positions (second baseman, left fielder, right fielder, third baseman, and first baseman). Rose also tied the NL record for consecutive game hitting streak at 44. The switch hitter also tied for most 200 hit seasons with 10. 3. David Ortiz- During his 14 seasons with the Red Sox, he was a ten-time All-Star, a three-time World Series champion, and seven-time Silver Slugger winner. Ortiz also holds the Red Sox single-season record for home runs with 54, which he set during the 2006 season. "Big "Papi" finished his career with 541 home runs currently ranking him at 17th All-Time. In his final season at 40, Ortiz had one of his best seasons batting .315 with 38 home runs and 127 RBI'S. Now that's the way to retire! Feel free to comment and add your favorites to this topic. You might want to back up your selections with stats to make your case. Hopefully, with your feedback we will have put together a fantastic Top Ten! Source- Wikipedia

Thanks, glad you enjoyed reading my post! Do you have a favorite team or ball player you follow? Is baseball popular in the Philippines?

@dgobucks226 not that I know of. Basketball and boxing are the two popular sports here. Volleyball is making its name as well. I don't have a favorite professional team. I only watch the collegiate teams here. Ateneo de Manila vs De LaSalle University was the last match I've watched.

@jobelbojel Well, with a boxing star like Manny Pacquiao I can see why boxing is so popular. Do you feel Pacquiao should retire or continue boxing?

Yep, lets add him! That knuckleball served him well into his 40's. Good choice

Three thumbs up for those three choices. I'll add Ichiro for active over-40 baseball players.

Excellent addition! One of the best and still a dangerous hitter.

Most athletes retire way before 40, so it is great you get guys like these that are so fit to still play their chosen sport at 40, DB. Sorry I can't add to the list.

The legendary Hank Aaron played until he was 42.

@dgobucks226 Aaron was a quiet no flash player yet just as tremendous as Mays. If you look at his stats, he never hit 40 in a season but the model of consistency for years and years.

@JohnRoberts Oh yes I agree! Tremendously consistent. Great all-around player. He was so good he didn't have to dive for balls and he had a great arm. And if you needed a stolen base he could get it,

Yes, how did I miss that one! Him and Tom Seaver were 2 of my favorite ballplayers growing up. Great pick When everyone was hyping Mantle and Mays, I was always saying Aaron was just as good if not better.
