Favorite City Songs #8 - "Going Down to Liverpool"

What does Leonard Nimoy have to do with #8 in my Favorite City Songs (a theme I've ripped off from @FourWalls) series? We'll get to that. The 8th spot belongs to "Going Down to Liverpool" by The Bangles. "Going Down to Liverpool," from the band's 1984 major label debut, All Over the Place, is actually a cover. Katrina and the Waves did it first, but Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson liked it enough to talk The Bangles into covering it. Interestingly, Susanna Hoffs was not the lead vocalist on the tune. Instead, drummer Debbie Peterson handled lead vocals, with Hoffs taking a background role. "Going Down to Liverpool" was not a big hit for The Bangles. It did not chart here in the United States, and only reached #79 in the UK. A re-release in 1986 performed a little better, peaking at #56 in the UK, and #21 in Ireland. Yet it's one of The Bangles' best songs, lack of chart performance be damned. As for Leonard Nimoy, he appears in the video, which is linked below. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Decent song but the video is rubbish - why Nimoy? The cabbie could be anybody and he should throw them out for messing with his radio. Then they arrive at the stadium and straight to stage from the cab with zero security to check they should be there

Nimoy was friends with the Hoffs family. But yeah, they shouldn't mess with the radio.

Leonard Nimoy in a Bangles video? Highly illogical!! Good song. Different than the Katrina & the Waves version, but that's good!

Apparently, he was friends with the Hoffs family and did it as a favor to them.

It would have been funnier if he'd been dressed as Spock.

@JohnRoberts - No. I never liked it. I prefer "The Hero Takes a Fall" and "Hazy Shade of Winter."

Other than "Walk like an Egyptian," I love The Bangles.
