Flight delays...

"We’re sorry for the delay to your flight, this is due to a crew welfare issue.... ... The delay will be approximately 2hrs and 10 minutes."
The words a weary passenger hates to see or hear on a dark, rainy night at a strange airport.
What to do when you're in an airport, the airline reps have finished their shift, and, one by one, the retail outlets are drawing down the shutters?
Thanks, the Operations team of the UK budget airline, Easyjet.
Meanwhile, we wait, wondering about onward connections, how family will get to school, to work, to normal Monday morning business...

@FayeHazel Every cloud has its silver lining - or in this case, orange and white-liveried Airbus A319.

@pgntwo Well, at least that's good, frustrating, but good

@TiarasOceanView Made it home shortly before 2am. It was harrowing at the time, but only to be expected on the last flight of the day, I expect. A bit achy from having to sit cross-legged on the floor for over an hour whilst waiting in a departure gate with zero seating.

@pgntwo We had a canceled flight from Nice (France) to New York. We had a connection to Los Angeles that day. It had to be an 18 hour flight (the two flights) we ended with a 28 hours nightmare. Sent to Amsterdam first, then to Atlanta, from Atlanta to New York, from New York to Las Vegas and finally Los Angeles. We were not happy.

Been there, done that. My record was a transatlantic crossing starting an hour late, a missed connection, a 3hour wait to get the transcontinental leg started, and then a 90min wait in the aircraft on the tarmac in 30+degree heat after that plane suffered an aborted take-off. A 28 hour journey followed by an hour's drive to my final destination in a self-drive hire car from the airport. Luckily, jet-lag is not so bad flying East to West...

@pgntwo It's always good to see retail outlets closing in airports even if it does heighten the sense of desolation. This way the women folk cannot do what they do best, but they are so canny that they have probably figured out what was about to happen and have already spent quite a bit in there. And delays always strengthen our resolve never to fly with the offending airline again but we know that we will and that makes us feel bad about our sorry little selves.

@pgntwo The time has come perhaps for ladies and gents to travel separately since gents are just so straightforward and don't hold things up. I am also petitioning for a men only day in town for Christmas shopping - we go in, get the business done and go home.

But then you have to endure the women-folk's indignant mood at being forced to rethink plans, make phone calls, re-arrange pickups... it started on the wrong foot at the security scan, I had practically stripped everything into 2 plastic trays and sailed through beepless, she was subjected to the full body scan and mandatory molestation by a surly and uncommunicative lady security official... would that I was so adept at manipulating my way around a fully-loaded brassiere in-situ in my youth!

This has happened a few times to me and all I do is kick back put up my feet and close my eyes. The noise around you keeps you half awake so you are sure to hear your plane being called. Plus there is also people around you that will wake you up because they are on the same plane as you. Nothing much else to do in such a case.

That is probably pretty much what happened. Every electrical socket or outlet the length of the departure area was used, people on smartphones and iPads. We only found out the duration of the delay by sms message, or via the airline's app, all staff had disappeared.

I suspect everybody in your house will go to bed early tonight following a night time of adventures and a weary day at work and play.

Absolutely not. I noticed the same airline cancelled its 19:30 flight from Birmingham to Belfast yesterday, not sure if there was a later flight to take up the slack... That said, the flight before hours, 90mins or so earlier, on Sunday departed with an hour's delay - it too must have been fairly full. Still, it affords the weary passenger plenty of time to experience fully the ground facilities, and I have a few choice words about those to express to the Housekeeping section at LPL this weekend
