Sleeping on the floor?

United Kingdom
September 25, 2017 6:57am CST
I've been reading a bit recently about the benefits of sleeping on the floor, and the negative aspects of sleeping on a mattress. It doesn't matter whether I sleep on an extremely firm mattress or not, I always wake up in the morning with my lower back painfully seized up and it's difficult to walk until I've moved around for a bit It makes sense that sleeping on the floor is better for us, beds are good for keeping us warmer and away from creepy crawlies but they're not natural, we haven't evolved to sleep on cushioned surfaces. Themore I think about it, the more I want to try it, the only thing stopping me is the fact that it would take at learning a few nights of poor sleep while my body gets used to it and sleep is a rare commodity for me at the minute

If you like to sleep a bit higher up, then you can still use your bed and put a wooden board in to sleep on.

Yes that helps to keep the back aligned.

I'd really like to be able to move around properly and safely pick my son up when I wake up in the mornings

@Akatheu Yeah he's 16 months old so although he's walking, I have to lift him out of his cot and carry him downstairs in the mornings

I think your back would lock up if you slept on the floor Lily..I can´t with my back either.

It would at first, because we don't use all our muscles properly when we sleep on a bed, but after a few days/weeks evidence suggests that it would be better than before I just don't think I can get through the difficulties at the beginning

@LilyBeBack Yes it would be very tough..I wouldn´t want to..and what about the cold on the floor? It would get into your back would it? Oh yes and I would be nervous of insects lol.. Do you mean you would sleep directly on the floorboards or with a sort of mat?

@TiarasOceanView From what I've read it's best to lay some blankets down and avoid draughts, use one flat pillow and still use a quilt as normal. If I ever do try it is think I'll do what @MALUSE suggested and put a wooden board on my bed in place of a mattress

I understand The reason that happens, though, is because your body is using muscles it hasn't used in a very long time.

@LilyBeBack Yes l think so. I had to use some pain killer med before l became alright. So sleeping on the floor is a no no for me.

If you do so, take care of your neck. It might be a huge problem.

I'd still use my pillow I only use quite a flat pillow anyway, and without pillows it would be natural to use your arm
