When Large Families Were in Style

Everyone in the U.S. was glued to their TV screens when “The Brady Bunch” first came on the air on September 26, 1969. Soon the theme song was in everyone’s head and the show had become popular. There are still many people enjoying the reruns today. The show was created by Sherwood Schwartz who already had a hit with the ever popular “Gilligan’s Island”. The Brady Bunch was the story of a widowed mom who had three daughters and then met and married a widowed architect with three boys. Now I really don’t think that something so perfect could happen in real life but this formula was a great success for TV. The family sort of melted together and included a friendly and helpful housekeeper named Alice portrayed by Ann B. Davis. They all lived in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Most of the series revolved around the typical day in and day our problems of the kids. The two eldest were Greg (Barry Williams) and Marcia (Maureen McCormick), the middle children Peter (Christopher Knight) and Jan (Eve Plumb) and the youngest Bobby (Mike Lookinland) and CIndy (Susan Olsen). The parents were Mike (Robert Reed) and Carol (Florence Henderson). I know that there were people who wished they were part of such a family even kids and those who were glad they didn’t have such a large family. Being an only child I always lost myself in the Brady world when the show was on the air. Altogether there were 177 episodes and the show went off the air on August 30, 1974. Now new generations have the pleasure of watching this show again. I know that every Christmas I enjoy watching the TV movie A Very Brady Christmas and seeing all of them now grown up. Let’s take a look at how much time has passed. Florence Henderson died in 2016 at the age of 82. Robert Reed passed away at the age of 59 in 1992. Barry Williams is 62, Maureen McCormick 61, Christopher Knight 59, Eve Plumb 59, Mike Lookinland 56 and Susan Olsen 56. How many Brady Bunch fans and do you still watch the reruns sometimes?
June 1, 2014: R.I.P. Ann B. Davis. You were, by far, one of the main reasons why I watched "The Brady Bunch" growing up. We will never forget you. Song from ...

I found the Brady Bunch rather silly. I am the youngest of eight kids. I hardly knew my oldest sister until I was a grownup cause by the time I really got going she was an adult and having her own family.

Of course real life cannot compare to TV but it was a cute show to watch if you didn't really take it seriously. Are you close to your brothers and sisters now @sallypup

I know this was a very popular show but I've rarely watched it. I don't think it was on our screens much.

@RasmaSandra We missed years of watching TV too so perhaps it was on then. I remember hearing it mentioned a lot.

I loved The Brady Bunch reruns when I was young but it it is really hard to blend a family especially the more kids there are. My ex and I have not been able to make it work. I never realized both the mother and father in the show were both widowed.

I would not consider myself a fan, I have watched a few episodes, however, over the years.

I was very little when this was on t.v. and I loved it. I come from a large family, later in life a blended family with step brothers and sisters. Real life was nothing like the Brady`s!

I wasn't growing up during that time but I did see reruns over the years when I was a kid. I was always happy to be an only child.

Would you believe it that some high school kids have been curious about this song with too many kids appearing? When I explained to them about the series, they were horrified.

@RasmaSandra They can't understand that a family could have that many kids, TV series or not - even when I explained, some were from her, some were from him etc. Those kids thought it was a camp.
