We are getting close to the end now. We've reached the podium in my Favorite Soundtrack Albums series: the #3 spot belongs to Superfly by the late, great Curtis Mayfield. Superfly, the soundtrack for the 1972 film of the same title, is Curtis Mayfield's masterpiece, both written and produced by himself. A classic album, it was one of a handful of soundtracks that actually out-grossed it's movie. The album, into which Mayfield injected a strong anti-drug point of view (Superfly is about a drug dealer trying to go straight, in case you didn't know.) The album spawned two smash hit singles, "Superfly," which reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Freddie's Dead," which peaked at #4. The album itself spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, and six weeks atop what was then called the Black Album chart (Don't get me started on this. Who cares if it's a "black record?" If it's good, it's good.) It also landed on the Jazz chart, peaking at #2. I've linked to Mayfield performing "Freddie's Dead" on Soul Train. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Like it, sounds fun and brings a message at the same time. Why can't modern pop and hip hop musicians learn to do the same.

Seems like a lot of people don't want to hear something with a message these days.
